As an aside, we were steeped the history of American screen culture as children with RTE. I remember watching Tarzan, The Marx Brothers, Shirley Temple, Westerns, civil war and war movies, swords and sandal epics, noir, right up to Bewitched and Dallas. And then Looney Toons repackaging it all.

Curious Irishism. In Lidl, a woman with a tray of eggs asking could she get by. Slightly panicked, she goes, "I'm up at the checkout." Evidently this was untrue, being, in fact, up at the eggs. Of course she meant, she'd left her trolley at the checkout while she went back to get eggs.

Had a great workshop this morning with 6th class boys in Blackrock. They came up with poems about their own Irish mythical creatures based on negative emotions. We had monsters called Fearg, Éad and Buairt. Wild imaginations! One boy had a worry monster that lived inside him with hundreds of eyes.

So thrilled to have a poem in this issue!

Picked up Mythical Irish Beasts by Mark Joyce for my son. Hoping it captures his imagination. The pictures are gorgeous.

Can we have a consensus on what small talk is? I don't want to get into my deepest fears and desires with the weird bus stop cowboy but I don't mind acknowledging the bite in the air. Then again I'd rather stick my head in a beehive rather than tell an acquaintance what I "got up to" at the weekend.
