Sure hope refactoring the weapons system will be quicker than the world gen. I need to make some headway with this game already

Since october ... yeah I've got distracted by other things. And it's gonna stay that way for a while yet. What with earning some actual money and all that to be able to eat and dump filthy amounts into my motorised vehicle. But making progress!

I think ima call the new world gen and mission generator good enough at this point. Time to tackle a remodeling of the weapons system and then ponder about dropping realtime-csg into the project... because CSG is the ONLY way to build levels. There is no fighting me on this one. #gamedev

To also say something positive. I do enjoy quite a lot that I can write UI in code. No visual editors required and all. I get that many people like visual editors. But I prefer working in text form and it's really enjoyable that I can. The Data Binding stuff is excellent as well

Okay. I found a solution. And it's fine. But it's kinda funky. Feels a bit sneaky to do it. But hey. I guess that's also kind of what the CSS heritage brings to the mix lol

Took some time today to check out unitys UI Toolkit API. Gotta say. Very tasty stuff. Very tasty indeed.

Steam Machines and Frames are nice and all. But I'm so looking forward to that new Steam Controller. I loved the first model. The new one looks like it'd be perfect for my sasquatch mittens. I definitely will find out once I can get a hold of one of these

In fact. I could probably use that to speed up module/module overlap tests (that operate on the SDFs). But it's already pretty fast so ... eh.

It appeats that this diversion path technique wasn't going to suffice. It would sometimes use transit elements where the exit connections would point to existing geometry. So I now rasterize the modules SDFs into a coarse world space grid to allow cheap look-aheads when placing modules. #gamedev

I did add a little diversion path in case the graph cannot be resolved spatially. Ie. there ain't no room to put a module. This uses small transit elements to move the execution to a spot where there is space. And it is wild (but plausible) 😂 #gamedev

The level isn't functional yet. But the graph generates pretty things now. And it's very controllable. Incidentally, this also fixes the issue of level segments being open so players could get out into the void. #gamedev

I wasn't happy with the junk I produced on my own, after all, and seeked help on the interwebs. Which means I watched youtube videos, hoping to find somebody that knows more about that topic than I do. Found @theshaggydev.bsky.social s videos. Highly recommended! Thanks for making them!

Challange has been mastered. I have some world generation back, now. Although everything else is broken. But making fresh new progress.

The binary patcher tool is a Unity game itself. See. Unity IS using their own engine to make something! 😂🫠

It's Unity Day in Germany. Really it's Tag der deutschen Einheit. But either way. It's funny that today of all days, Unity publishes patches for some security vulnerability that apparently needs somewhat immediate attention. Because ... Unity? Get it? Unity Day? ... heh 🫠

Kinda makes sense now that they went on ahead and tried to make new projects cloud projects by default the other time. That in combination with default-enabled diagnostics services sure would bump the user numbers right up

So, #unity folks. Mind this here new default setting. Unity Diagnostics are not compliant with the GDPR by default. You have to take action on your own (at least provide opt-out option) or manually disable the usage. #gamedev

I was today years old when I learned there is a FixedString API in Unity. With which one can do allocation free string manipulations. Can combine that with an extention to TMP_Text to accept these. Nice, nice docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com... #gamedev #unity

Someone wasn't paying attention 🫠

So Unitys Autotile Tile generates default colliders for sprites that have no custom shape. Making it effectively useless when painting a tileset that has walls and floors at the same time. Because the floors will become solid. Sometimes I just can't with this engine 🥲

Did the right thing and dumped another day into my codegen project to generate serializing and deserializing code. Bit like MemoryPack or similar. Only this works with patching data into existing objects and is Unity compatible... And is no doubt many orders of magnitude slower than MemoryPack.

Faintly remembered hot-reload from my minecraft modding days. Took the chance in the last sale to purchase the hot reload plugin for Unity. And it's like they say in the reviews. As if you're surfacing from the dark depths of the ocean and breathing air for the first time in a long time

Roughly 4 hours to build code that lets me feed my nav graph a pre-assembled node network. And also some more code to actually generate this network from static level geometry. That's the result of this train ride. Well, not too shabby.

Has anyone ever attempted to make a tool in Unity that can generate a simple trimsheet for hotspotting from a base texture? And, lets imagine, a sliced edge mask...? Because I am and I'm getting there but it feels like this should be a solved problem 🤔

And this is what I did with my art from earlier. Improved my room-detection. It handles sticking-out geometry so much better now, almost no artifacts left. D idn't want to but I had to improve on it because of the way I'm building rooms now

It's the middle of the night which is why I'm pondering about projecting poisson disk sample points onto a sphere. Because why would you not want to do such things?

Personally, not a fan of their questioning though. I'd go out on a limb and suggest, if you haven't been there, it's a) too far away and b) it's impossible to fathom what the terror and pain actually is for all involved. Videogames cannot possibly put a dent in the perception in either direction.

The amount of fancy stuff I did the past couple days to crack down on GC allocations and rendering performance... And all it is in the changelogs is "improved performance". Doesn't really do the work justice but it is what it is. Most people are really not interested in technical deep dives

So everything works and nothing broke and I got my fancy render feature to work. Which, as a side effect, allows me to give a custom cockpit FOV option. But also since I can use the Forward+ render path now, I get resident drawers and GPU culling and stuff. Performances!
