one lesson you learn as you experience more life is that the goal is really not to be liked by everybody. rather, the real goal is to be liked by the right kind of people and, by extension, be disliked by the other group.

as spectacular as Wemby’s Game 1 was, it was almost proof of why the Thunder have a good chance to win this series. It took an all-time superhuman effort (highlighted by a crazy shot) just to get by in double-OT. Hard to sustain that over a full best-of-7 series.

one of the underrated joys in life is listening to someone talk about something they are deeply passionate about. doesn't have to be something you care even one iota for, but just listening to somebody light up and talk about is such an experience. highly recommend to do that every so often

Another year of the Dallas Stars being really good. Another year of the Stars not being truly great. They're built to last, but you only get so many kicks at the can. Are the Stars in danger of becoming the new Sharks? My column from Game 6: www.nytimes.com/athletic/724...

Jim Nill always said that if you reached the final four, the team was good enough to win the championship. obviously the NHL playoff format did the Stars no favors with the matchup but this team showed it really wasn't championship caliber this year (yes, injuries; point remains)

reaching the conference championship round is never the goal but that is not easy to do, let alone do it three consecutive years. i do think there was a little bit of taking it for granted settled in towards the end of that run.

unfortunate but the it felt doomed ever since Game 4. this ending felt like a formality

the few weeks in the spring when it’s the first (and even second) round of the NBA and NHL playoffs simultaneously is a pretty underrated sports time on the calendar. 2-3 games for each league every night, from early evening to late into the night. love it!
