Last weekend two members of our super sewing squad were in action. Helen and Nicola worked on repairing clothing and a bag. We were really pleased to meet with a new volunteer who we hope will be lending their sewing skills at future repair sessions. Welcome to the team!

We had another busy repair afternoon yesterday! We worked on several festive items so, before everyone puts away their Christmas decorations... meet the Clauses, who are dancing and singing together once more.

The results are in... At this month's trial of two sessions in one day we had 26 items brought for repair in the morning, and 26 in the afternoon. What a spectacular score draw! In total, over the two sessions, we fully repaired 28 items, and partially repaired or gave advice on 4 of them...

Sewing Repair Volunteers Wanted! We need more people who can carry out repairs to textiles such as clothing, bags, home furnishings and soft toys.

Last Saturday we had the pleasure of meeting Dobbin the rocking horse! He had been sourced from Nextdoor to replace a similar horse that our visitor and her sister had owned as children.

The addition of a morning session paid off nicely on Saturday! We got lots of repairs done over the two sessions but at a more relaxed pace than when we are only there in the afternoon 😎.

🎄🎄🎅🎄🎄 Lots of new gifts and decorations get bought at this time of year, but we think it's better to repair what you have already got! You don't have to throw broken things away - get them mended instead and enjoy them for years to come. You could also re-gift something that has sentimental value.

Last month this broken clockwork toy was brought along to the Repair Cafe. The mechanism inside had become detached and Santa was stuck on a stationary sleigh. Peter glued parts, straightened wires, and even remodelled a reindeer hoof!

Peter & Les spent a lot of time looking at clocks at November's Repair Cafe! These clocks all needed advice on where to source and how to fit the parts needed to get them working. Passing on knowledge and giving people the confidence to carry out repairs at home is an important part of what we do!

At the November Repair Cafe, we had 40 items brought for repair - one of our busiest months. Unfortunately we lost electricity in the repair room and so only 24 of these items were looked at 😨

We held our AGM on Saturday. Kate presented a report on the data she has logged each month. In the past 12 months, our repairers have examined 393 broken items. Of these, 192 were fully repaired, 52 were partially repaired or required advice, and 55 needed the purchase of a spare part.

Thank you to the lovely Yvonne who visited the Repair Cafe on Saturday to see if we wanted a donation of a collection of watches. We are very grateful and will use them for practicing repairs or for spare parts.

We're so sorry to those who were affected by the electricity tripping in the repair room this afternoon. It meant we were unable to continue working on many of the electrical items that were brought in or on ones that required tools that needed electricity.

At the previous Repair Cafe, Nicola rethreaded a jammed overlocker. Nicola is happy to help anyone in need of assistance with a sewing machine. Jim will also be with us tomorrow and has brought many a broken sewing machine back to life. We're back in action tomorrow afternoon!

Sometimes an item that is brought in for repair needs a new part. Our repairers can advise on where to source the part so that it can either be fitted at home by the client, or brought back to the Repair Cafe the following month to be installed by one of our volunteers.

This month's Repair Cafe saw 47 items brought in to be fixed - the highest number since we have been based at Birkenhead Library! Of these, 16 were fully repaired and 3 were partially repaired. 12 items needed a new part and will be brought back at a future session so the parts can be installed.

At this month's Repair Cafe, Helen kindly sewed up some moth holes in Barbara's jumper, skillfully making tiny darning stitches with a matching thread so that the repair couldn't be seen. If you want to learn how to darn this is a good place to start 👇 www.gathered.how/knitting-and...

At last week's Repair Cafe we were asked to replace a zip on a backpack but didn't have the correct type of zip for the job. We gave advice on sourcing a new zip so that it can be inserted next month.

We were delighted that Barbara was the winner of the Community Action category at the Cool Wirral Climate Action Awards last night! She richly deserves the recognition for being the driving force behind the setting up and running of Wirral Repair Café.

At September's repair session, 38 items were brought along to be fixed. Of these 22 were fully repaired and 7 were partially repaired, just required advice or needed a new part. We had a record 12 repeat visitors! Here's a video showing photos of a few of the successful repairs.

Dave is one of the newer members of the Wirral Repair Cafe team. Dave has great general repair skills but specialises in string instruments, including the ukulele in the photo.

To follow up from Sunday's post, Jan has sent us a photo of her bag. She took Nicola's advice about buying the acrylic paint and used it on the handles where the colour had flaked off. Jan says, "I'm so pleased with the result." Glad we could help!

Sometimes all that is needed is a bit of advice or help. At the repair cafe last weekend, Nicola and Helen gave a recommendation for a brand of acrylic paint to buy to restore the colour on the handle of a bag. The paint can be used on shoes too. www.angeluspaint.co.uk

We had another busy repair session yesterday. Our youngest (and cutest!) visitor was Zara whose much loved digital watch had stopped working and was missing the buckle on the strap.

Wirral Repair Cafe volunteer Manisha has a paper mache dancing doll from India, bought by her dad over 60 years ago. The doll's advancing age and a previous repair on her arms had left her off balance and with a stiff dancing style.

On Saturday, our volunteers got together for an in-house repair session. It was a chance to catch up with each other, as well as to share the collective knowledge we have as a team.

Do you have a hole in your sock or a threadbare jumper? Have you ever wondered how to darn your clothes so they last longer? Our darning expert can show you how it is done, and give you guidance so you can have a go yourself.

Did you know that, on average, each household in Wirral throws away over 11kg of textiles a year? Shockingly much of this is still in good enough condition to be worn. Many times a needle and thread are all that are needed to keep your clothes out of the bin and give you more years of wear.

We had another very successful and busy afternoon at this month's Repair Cafe. 35 items were brought in and, of these, 20 were fully repaired. A further 2 items were partially repaired or just required advice and 7 items needed a spare part which can be installed at a future date.

On Saturday, we tried out a new layout at the Repair Cafe. The sign-in desk is now in the main library area, which is closer to where we serve refreshments. It certainly encouraged more people to drink tea and eat cake - the cafe team has never been so busy!

Does your lawn mower or strimmer just not cut it anymore? Don't buy a new one - bring it to Wirral Repair Cafe and our volunteers will do their best to get it working again. If a spare part is required, we can give advice on where to buy it so that it can be fitted at a future repair session.
