⚽️Sat April 28th 1962 ⚽️ Ray Crawford hit two goals for Town at Portman Road to beat Aston Villa and secure the Division One Championship title, way before the inception of the Premier League. Ironically, it was on April 28 in 1999 that Sir Alf passed away, aged 79.

⚽ Sat Apr 24th 2010 ⚽ A last-minute Jon Walters goal grabbed a 2-2 draw at champions elect Newcastle United. A crowd of 52,181 also witnessed a fine Connor Wickham (pic) goal for Town before the trophy was handed to the jubilant Geordies.

⚽ Fri Apr 20th 1962 ⚽ A Portman Road record crowd of 30,649 mobbed the Town players on the final whistle as a late Jimmy Leadbetter goal forced a 2-2 draw against Arsenal and kept the Blues in the hunt for the First Division title. Three days later, The Gunners were crushed 3-0 at Highbury

⚽ Tue Mar 26th 1985 ⚽ England beat Eire 2-1 at Wembley as Terry Butcher got the better of future Town manager Mick McCarthy. Butcher set up Trevor Steven's opening goal with a fine ball and later saw Gary Lineker later scored his first Three Lions goal.

⚽ Sat Mar 25th 1967 ⚽ South African born Colin Viljoen marked his Town debut in style with a home hat-trick as Portsmouth were beaten 4-2. Outrageously skilful but injury-plagued, Viljoen scored 54 goals in 372 appearances and won 2 England caps from Don Revie in 1975.

⚽ Wed Mar 24th 1993 ⚽ Town stalwarts Craig Forrest and Frank Yallop featured for Canada in 1-0 win in San Jose against Costa Rica. The pair went on to win 108 international caps between them and a combined 697 appearances for The Blues whilst at Portman Road.

⚽ Sat Mar 23rd 1963 ⚽ Scottish left winger Jimmy Leadbetter, affectionally nicknamed "Sticks" due to his spindly frame, was the hero at Old Trafford at Town beat Sir Matt Busby's men 1-0. The left-winger's 35th minute ensured a first ever victory over The Red Devils

⚽ Sat Mar 22nd 2014 ⚽ Mick McCarthy's Town beat Brighton 2-0 at The Amex and continued their march towards the play-off places. Tommy Smith headed home at he back post before a jinking Jonny Williams home was steered home by Daryl Murphy before a packed away end.

⚽ Sat Mar 21st 1998 ⚽ Town made it 37 points out of a possible 45 as Wolves were clattered 3-0 at Portman Road. David Johnson scored first before clean strikes from Matt Holland and James Scowcroft sealed the Division One win.

⚽ Sat Mar 20th 2004 ⚽ Teenager Dean Bowditch scored a hat-trick live on Sky TV as the Tractor Boys thumped Watford 4-1 at Portman Road in front of 23,524 fans. Jermaine Wright scored the fourth goal when he slammed home as time expired.

⚽ Sat Mar 19th 1966 ⚽ Bill McGarry's men comfortably beat Norwich City 2-0 at Portman Road thanks to goals from Ray Crawford and Billy Baxter. Baxter won the old Division 2 title in 1960–61, the Division 1 title in 1961–62 and the Division 2 Championship in 1967–68.

⚽ Sat Mar 17th 2001 ⚽ Martijn Reuser's free-kick on the hour mark kept Ipswich in the hunt for a European place and condemned West Ham to a 1-0 defeat. The Dutchman's effort gave George Burley's men their first away victory in three months after a fine second half performance.

⚽ Sat Mar 10th 2001 ⚽ Chris Makin, signed from Sunderland for £1.25m, made his Town debut in a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. Makin enjoyed a solid spell at Portman Road and finished with 92 total appearances pver three years before joining Leicester City.

⚽ Thu Mar 9th 1950 ⚽ Roger Charles Osborne, the Blues FA Cup winning goalscorer in 1978, was born in Otley. During eight seasons he showed his versatility by usually being asked to mark the opposition's most dangerous player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.

⚽ Sat Mar 8th 1952 ⚽ The Blues drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace in a Division Three (South) game at Portman Road thanks to a goal from inside-forward Belfast-born Sam McCrory. Despite lacking pace, McCrory's poise and intelligence made him a fine asset in Scott Duncan's side.

⚽ Sat Mar 3rd 1979 ⚽ Town held champions and European Cup challengers Nottm Forest to a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in a big Division One clash. Gary Birtles put Forest ahead but Alan Brazil scored a deserved leveller days before the Blues were to smash Barcelona.

⚽ Sun March 2nd 1986 ⚽ Bobby Ferguson, deciding his Town players needed a winter sunshine break, beat a Iraq National XI 1-0 in a Baghdad friendly. Their journey to the Middle East took 15 hours thanks to numerous delays and 3,000 locals turned up to see Trevor Putney score

⚽ Sat Mar 1st 1980 ⚽ Town hammered sec0nd-placed Manchester United 6-0 at Portman Road and still managed to miss three penalties on a memorable afternoon in front of 30,170. Paul Mariner grabbed a hat-trick and Alan Brazil a double while Frans Thijssen opened the scoring.

⚽ Mon Feb 27th 1939 ⚽ A crowd of 300 at Port Vale's Old Recreation Ground is the lowest ever attendance at a Town game since turning professional (COVID-19 excluded). The Blues lost 2-0 in a Southern Section Cup game to The Valiants.

⚽ Wed Feb 26th 1992 ⚽ Despite a brilliant Town performance in the FA Cup 5th Round, Town lost 3-2 at Anfield thanks to two wonderful Liverpool goals in extra-time. Jason Dozzell had put Ipswich ahead after Gavin Johnson's superb diving header levelled matters in the 81st minute.

⚽ Sat Feb 25th 1978 ⚽ A vital winner from wily Clive Woods saw Town triumph 1-0 at Newcastle United and grab a huge victory in their attempt to stave off relegation from the top-flight. Woods, now 77 years old, was man of the match in the 1978 FA Cup Final win.

⚽ Tue Feb 24th 1998 ⚽ Stocky speedster David Johnson notched his first career hat-trick as Town crushed Oxford United 5-2. The Blues set a new club record for hitting five goals in a third consecutive home game as Alex Mathie and Matt Holland also netted in front of 11,824 fans.

⚽ Sat Feb 23rd 1957 ⚽ Doug Millward scored Town's fastest ever goal after eight seconds as Newport County were crushed 5-0 at Portman Road. The Sheffield born striker won a promotion and two titles for The Town and died in Baltimore after coaching in the USA.
