What still gets me about #worldbuilding is the connections. How a river changes a town, a law changes a family, or a border changes a childhood. You change one thing, and it doesn’t stay contained. It reaches outward. That’s the part I love. Seeing how the world pushes back.

I’ve just started working on my next #worldbuilding guide. A few days ago, this book hadn’t even crossed my mind; I had absolutely no intention of writing it. And now… here we are. You’ll have to wait a while to find out what it’s about, but even I didn’t see this one coming!

Folklore often falls apart because it never quite comes together. What people usually need is a way to pull the right pieces—a belief, a fear, a place, a consequence—into a story that actually belongs to the world it’s part of. That’s how folklore starts to feel older than the world it lives in.

One filter I use when I’m #worldbuilding is that, if something’s going to be in the story, it needs to do at least one of these: • Moving the plot forward • Revealing character • Exploring themes If it’s not doing any of them, I usually let it go, but because every detail has to earn its place.

I’m endlessly fascinated by how worlds shape the people who live in them. The culture, the rules, the expectations, even the landscape itself. Building worlds lets me explore those connections; how environments change people, and how people, in turn, leave their mark on the worlds around them.

I've been restocking my mini map bottles ready for my first event of the year; the Witch Elm Imbolc Market. These little stoppered bottles contain a tiny hand-drawn map (yes, really!), real dried moss, and teeny stars cut from vintage book pages.

Names have a strange amount of power. Get one wrong and the whole thing feels off. Get one right and suddenly you’re writing again. That’s a problem I can help people untangle. #worldbuilding #koficommissions

I’ve been thinking about #folklore lately; not the grand stories, but the everyday things. The warnings people pass on, the paths they don’t take after dark, the habits people continue without knowing why. Those little details tell you what a world really fears, and what it’s learned to live with.

Snow on Friday meant nowhere to be and nowhere to rush to. We walked, threw snowballs, got cold, and retreated home for coffee and toast. I’ve spent most of the weekend indoors after that, working on something new. It's there to find for those who seek it, or wait for the announcement next week.
