My main reflection about the Smashing Machine is that I think I saw way more publicity about The Rock talking about The Rock being a more serious actor now than anything about the actual film.

Love it when the directors of these things fly under the radar and have some fun.

One Battle After Another - great time at the movies. Big crowd pleaser. That chase scene on an IMAX screen was something else.

Avatar 3 looks neat, and it'll be nice to have a big old epic blockbuster at Christmas again. Last year, we had...Kraven the Hunter and that rubbish LOTR anime.

Finished Alien: Earth, and it's one of the best examples of Surf Dracula in recent memory. Good job they have a season 2 order ready to go....oh.

Decided to give The Absence of War a whirl. Enjoyable political drama if laying it on a bit thick with the shadow of the then 1992 election. John Thaw perhaps too naturally charismatic for the role of an under fire leader during an election campaign.

Very enjoyable episode of Alien Earth this week - it's part speed run of Alien but also an inversion of that film. Babou Ceesay is fantastic.

My guess is the BBC will move In Our Time to have a rotation of guest presenters because that's what they always do when they can, even if it misses the point.

It's a point that a lot of people get caught out by at first, but most people aren't the showrunner of a Fargo TV series.

Watched Grizzly Man this evening. I suspect this isn't a new reflection, but it's really striking watching it these days and reflecting how Treadwell was like a proto-influencer, including with the self mythologising.

Watching the Doomwatch movie. Maybe a mistake to focus so much on fish. Also, I am curious how the agency got the name "Doomwatch" through the civil service. It may be an arms length body, but I don't think that would cut the mustard with the higher-ups.

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the construction of Starbucks, which sits across from the Great Pyramid, than the construction of the Great Pyramid itself.

I mostly liked Eddington, which I think is a movie about people recording each other but never listening to each other. Felt long in a way that Beau is Afraid didn't but can't fault the craft.

If you've ever doubted the talents of Ridley Scott, give Alien Earth a watch and compare how the replica sets are shot in those episodes vs. how they are shot in the film. But still, I'm quite enjoying it. Some iffy bits but expect it'll come together nicely in subsequent episodes.

It's interesting how quickly Marvel moves on from promoting their current films to future ones. Fantastic Four is still a pretty new release, but all I've seen this week is Spider-Man and now this.

My favourite thing about the scammers pretending to sell Oasis tickets is when they say the venue is "Scottish Gas Murrayfield" which is definitely what we all call it.

Weapons is an absolute hoot. The film ending just as the Oasis gig concluded and having to walk in the opposite direction to 60,000 folk...less of a hoot.

Kids wanted to see The Smurfs movie, and it really is quite insulting how much slop is served up to children. There's decent kids' movies, and there's ones which have an inexplicable soundtrack featuring the b-sides by a pop star that doesn't match the tone or story of the film itself.

Reminding me a lot of the short films that would pop up on 4Later while you were waiting for Vidz.

I'm sure at one point Smith had been cast in Rise of Skywalker (perhaps as a young Palpy?)
