Today the government chose legal maneuvers over negotiation. Instead of responding to the ATA’s latest proposal, it filed a Labour Relations complaint to delay and distract. Teachers are ready for a deal—government is not. /1

When the government first announced plans to ban or limit books in schools, it created confusion for boards, anxiety for teachers, and made the public question both government priorities and the integrity of teachers in an already underfunded system

I keep thinking about these images, and others I have seen over the last week of teachers getting rid of their classroom libraries because of the Ministerial Order. They weren't confused by what it said, they were overwhelmed with the task of inventorying 1000's of books.

The government's book ban “pause” has become a game of Red Light, Green Light. Today: stop culling libraries. Tomorrow: start again? Teachers spent their summer pulling books to meet an arbitrary deadline. Our students deserve libraries filled with books, not political games.

My beloved mom passed away suddenly Sunday after a short but brave battle with cancer. I’m heartbroken over the loss. Her strength, love, and humour will be missed deeply. Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and paramedics who treated her with such compassion and care.

Given that AISH is a statutory program, meaning that by law a citizen is entitled to it if they fulfill certain medical criteria, a forecast cut to AISH spending almost certainly means AB will be changing eligibility requirements. There is no other way in which the math can possibly math.

Tomorrow, when the finance minister stands before the legislature and delivers the budget, be aware that anything less than $11.35 billion in total operational dollars for public education means that the province is deliberately and shamefully underfunding Alberta’s students.

The last few days have been a whirlwind—windshields, late nights, conventions, election forums, and a LOT of coffee! Despite the busy days, it’s energizing to connect with hundreds of colleagues across the province. Seeing so many friends, even briefly, was a highlight.
