THE VANISHING SHADOW (1934). After Republic, Universal made the best serials, often with their top talent involved. All 12 episodes were by Lew Landers (usually serials had two directors), with lots of well-shot action. The inventions are great and Richard Cramer is hilarious as usual. 📽️

DEATHWATCH (1965), directed by Vic Morrow, based on a 1947 play by Jean Genet, starring Leonard Nimoy, Michael Forrest and Paul Mazursky. Imdb: "A small-time thief battles with his gay cellmate over a third illiterate, muscular convict." This was the film that got Nimoy the part of Spock! 📽️

DEMON OF THE HIMALAYAS (1935), the first film made at that location (height 6400m). Score by Arthur Honegger. An expedition travels to "The Golden Throne" in the mountains to find a mythical demon. Some of the Tibet footage was later used in LOST HORIZON. Best of all: custom English subs. 🎥 #horror

THE BELLS (1926) with Lionel Barrymore. Nothing to do with Poe and based on a play by Erckmann-Chatrian, it's a story of gold lust and murder, with an under-40 Boris Karloff as The Mesmerist. The best part is the concluding nightmare sequence, "The Dream of Accusing Conscience."🎥 #horror

MANHUNT IN THE AFRICAN JUNGLES (1943) The stars were all in the army so WWII was a good time for non-American actors. What this lacks in names it makes up for in action-- every chair, box, table & vase in the shot is there to be destroyed over someone's head. Duncan Reynaldo is French agent Pierre!🎥

THE MAN WHO RECLAIMED HIS HEAD (1934). Always wanted to see it but could never bring myself to watch the only print around. Glad I waited-- compare and contrast the old copy with how the blu-ray looks.📽️

Of all the comics I bought when I was between eight and ten, I can't think of any I have more fondness for than this one. All the stories were written by John Stanley (LITTLE LULU) and they were scary, funny or both. You'll only find copies in this shape because we read it to death! #comicsky

REUNION IN HELL by John H. Knox. As long as you know every story will end the same way-- for example, the dripping, foul-smelling winged thing is the hero's business partner dressed in a bat-suit drenched in snake oil-- these stories are great, twisted fun, '30s pulp at its grisliest.📚💙 #horror

THE WHISPERING SHADOW (1933) Prof. Strang (Bela Lugosi) uses his "House of Mystery" waxworks as a front for his criminal activities. Is he The Whispering Shadow, only seen as a silhouette and kills by remote radio heat ray? Probably, but I'm only on chapter two. Mascot's stuntmen took CRAZY risks!🎥

DARKEST AFRICA (1936), crackbrained Republic "super" serial starring Clyde Beatty, which uses Africa only as an excuse for lots of lions and the place to hide the lost city of Joba. The best serial studio pulled out all the stops for costumes and effects for this and the credits are great. 🎥

Sometimes actors from "good" films had to do a movie serial for their weekly check. Knowing only kids would see them, they'd often turn in very enjoyable and slyly campy performances. Here's Regis Toomey with Prussian secret agent Lionel Atwill in RAIDERS OF GHOST CITY with Mrs. Olsen in between.🎥

"The Haunted Baronet" by J. S. Le Fanu isn't as well known (or wasn't to me) as some of his other work but it's an almost-perfect novella of the supernatural, filled with weird occurances, eerie moments and fun characters that makes its 120 pages fly by. These illos are from its first edition.
