The NSW parliament is about to pass a law empowering the police to prohibit all public assemblies in whatever area they specify, for 14 days when a terrorist incident has been declared (also by the police). Clearly unconstitutional, even if you accept a direct link between protests and terrorism.

Which was more likely to incite antisemitic violence: weekly pro-Palestinian marches attended by hundreds of thousands of citizens, or the televised devastation of Gaza? It's a fair question, but even asking it may soon be illegal.

This is a terrible mistake, borne of laziness and cowardice, and will be one of Anthony Albanese's longest lasting and most destructive legacies. Considering how we teach the Holocaust is one thing; entrenching pro-Israel ideology in our education system is a whole other thing.

One can say many things about the idea of prohibiting protests during a "terrorist incident", but the words "martial law" and "unconstitutional" spring immediately to mind.

Now we live in a city that has experienced a racially targeted mass-casualty terror attack. There is a pervasive sadness and sense of something lost. The fall-out so far has been predictable and depressing. We'd prefer the focus to be on grief and reflection, not blame, but that's not how it goes.

We support gun laws, don’t understand why anyone in a city needs guns or why anyone anywhere needs lots of guns. If you’re pro-gun you’re pro-killing things and therefore you’re a weirdo.
