“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness… The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live…is…victory.” Howard Zinn

I don’t see much evidence that anyone believes in a big, inclusive tent anymore. The attitude is I’m ok with your needs as long as mine are met first.

TIME TO FIGHT BACK

We have normalized this in America. This is just today. • A shooting at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, in which 2 were killed and 8 wounded • A shooting at a restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, in which 3 were killed and 8 wounded It’s the guns.

What I’ve learned from listening to crime podcasts is if I’m ever a cashier at Walmart, and someone buys duck tape, zip ties and a large tarp…. I’m calling the authorities.

America 2025 feels like being on a forced hike with people who won't listen to your experience and don't believe the map. Now we are in the wilderness, and they are still confused as to what happened.

I do not want you to hurt like I do. I do want you to be kind to me while I hurt. I also want you to want me to not be hurt, just as you want this for yourself.

I guess I’m speechless. This woman really believes she owned another woman’s body due to a surrogacy arrangement and is entitled to ruin her life because the baby died in utero. Something is very wrong with this industry.

The Baby Died. Whose Fault Is It?
When her son died in utero, a venture capitalist went to extremes to punish her surrogate.

BTW, a US administration declaring war on an US city and its people is an act of civil war. So much for pretending to be a Nobel Peace Prize candidate.

The arrogant and dismissing audacity of someone telling you the hate you are personally experiencing is not hate. Don’t do that to anyone. I don’t care how kind you think you are, it is not kind or loving. Respect the fact that people recognize hateful actions directed toward them.

Jesus did not come down from heaven to earth so you can suffer under small minded people for the sake of peace and unity. Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain by accepting mistreatment and abuse for Jesus or Christianity. Jesus did not teach this and the Holy Spirit won’t led anyone to this.

Pain turns a nice person into a not very nice person. Unless you really, really, really work hard at regulating your emotions. You don't have the nice little pauses to let it build up. Deal with it immediately.

It's funny how some of the main tenants of software development like "always sanitize and validate user input", which is useful not only for security but for data integrity, has completely evaporated in "AI". We're feeding raw sensor data and webform contents into GPUs in production now. 🤡

's new On Data and Democracy post, but I haven't seen this chart getting the attention I think it deserves. US lawmakers are remarkably old, and the gap here between population age and lawmaker age is exceptional.

If you grew up in a household with an evangelical right-wing parent, as I did, you already know that the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, like the reversal of Roe v. Wade, is the culmination of a 50-year project.

Thousands of years off evolution never prepared our bodies for endless layoffs, or capitalism for that matter. We are inherently loyal and communal. Capitalism driven layoffs break the things we want most; loyalty for hard work and community where we work. It's anti-human.

McKinsey did a bangup job turning a great company into a toxic mess. That's what endless layoffs will do. 10+ years into their legacy and each year is more toxic than the last.

Pretending everything is normal, in order to function, takes a toll. You have to set aside time to feel or you will slowly grow cold and numb. But it's better than believing everything is normal, when it's not. That requires blindness, and feeling sorrow is better than not seeing.

For my entire church life, people warned what would happen in the government stopped us from assembling. For those of us in multi-cultural churches, the government has caused communities in our churches to stop assembling. Where is the outcry? Where is the solidarity? Where is the unity?

A Beloved community is formed by joy and suffering. Both, and. If it’s just shaped by joy, it may be a community, but it’s not a Beloved community where all members are loved and belong. A Beloved community welcomes the suffering and suffers with them.
