3 cheers for this amazing painted lady butterfly; despite having lost a hind wing, it still managed to fly off strongly...go butterfly 🦋🤩💚 #DidYouKnow that painted lady butterflies migrate south but fly at speeds up to 30mph and above 500m, out of sight of humans but picked up on radar 😮

Aren't the colours of nature amazing😍 This piece of deadwood, spotted by our colleague Eleanor, has been stained by green elf-cup fungus. It's much more common to find stained fallen timber - usually oak, beech or hazel - than to find the fruiting bodies (the cups) 🍄

Our project to restore land at #GreenFarm next to #Monkwood nature reserve has involved planting 5271 trees (there's natural regeneration happening too) & 230m of hedge as well as laying 350m of hedge. Our trainee Sophie spotted this ruddy darter at #Monkwood nature reserve. They’re similar to common darters but, apart from this blood-red colour seen in males, the easiest way to tell them apart is that ruddy darters have all black legs whilst common darters have a yellow stripe down theirs.

What a brave badger! Our team came across this half-eaten wasp nest recently – it looks like a badger had dug it out to get at the delicious and protein-rich wasp larvae within the nest 🦡🐝

We LOVE rowan trees 😍 Autumn sees huge clusters of bright red berries appearing on rowan trees, a favourite food of birds such as visiting waxwings, redwings and other thrushes. By eating the berries, the birds help the tree disperse its seeds - a lovely example of symbiosis in the natural world.
