don't know how hot of a take this is but sonic forces may've been onto something by trying to retcon classic sonic into an alternate universe. instead of forcing the classic versions to remain stationary so they can stay relatively the same for adventure, they could actually progress as characters

my ultimate verdict on PvZ replanted? …it’s got a lot of problems and there’s a lot of reasons to criticize it. some of these problems will likely be ironed out over time, but others probably won’t. it’s mediocre and buggy but still a playable port. it’s definitely better after the day 1 patch.
