The 80s had a real thing for nostalgia about the ’50s and ’60s. I seem to remember there were quite a few films like this, most of which I managed to avoid. This is one I didn’t. Clearly I was dragged along — if it is indeed possible to be dragged to a film starring Phoebe Cates.

I hadn’t seen Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, nor was I particularly familiar with Michael Keaton, but I do remember being really into Beetlejuice back in 1988. The low-fi look and quirky humour felt unlike anything I’d seen at the time, and Danny Elfman’s score is still an absolute banger. #tbeatlejuice
