"The genocide in Rwanda happened when I was 12. During this time, I got HIV. My mother and two of my sisters were also killed. The rest of my family fled, and after three long years, we came to Australia. After I turned 17 in 1999, I started getting really sick. Now we know this was the HIV. 1/3

"I was 24, when I got HIV in Rwanda. I didn’t know anything about the virus or that I had been infected. I wanted to study engineering in a Western country, and travelled to Australia in January 1994 on a student visa. 3 months later, my family was killed in the genocide. 1/3

"When I was 12 years old, I was married. This was common then. Two years later, his family made me leave and sent me home to my parents. In 1998, I decided I would travel abroad to Australia on a student visa to study pharmacy. 1/3
