Today, City Council voted 11-2 to approve the Convention Center expansion. This will cost us an additional $104 million each year for the next 30 years. ($104 million = 900 City jobs) The City of LA NEEDS to fundamentally change the way it handles its finances.

"If you think city services are bad now — and I think all of us would agree that they suck — and you thought maybe one day we would have funding to restore service, I have bad news. It's going to get worse." Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky absolutely shredding the $3B convention center plan to bits

“If this plan goes through, the City is projected to need an additional average of $116 million from the General Fund each year for the next 28 years starting in FY2029. $116 million is the equivalent of nearly 1,000 City jobs.”

🔎 Talking about our latest Performance Audit on the City's oversight and monitoring of our Affordable Housing stock. The City oversees about 47,000 affordable housing units but still needs over 400,000 affordable housing units to meet the needs of low-income households.

🚨TODAY, July 1, the yearly allowed rent increase (up to 5%* this year) for rent-stabilized units takes effect. *For MOST rent-stabilized units, the max increase is 3%. But IF your landlord pays gas &/or electricity, they can increase up to another 2% (1% for each they pay).

🧊 You all asked HOW MUCH the City of LA has spent so far related to the June protests against ICE 🧊 • $11,463,435 (estimated/preliminary costs thru Friday, June 13, 4:30pm) • These mainly relate to the City's response (e.g. labor costs), followed by clean-up / damage costs

This has come up due to concerning videos of LAPD's use-of-force in response to these protests. In 2020, the City of LA received 55 lawsuits stemming from protests including the murder of George Floyd: • 28 have been settled for $13,162,000 • 21 have not been resolved and...

As the City's Accountant, we're working to calculate City related costs to protests in response to the violent ICE raids & militarization of our City. One question we've been getting asked a lot is: "HOW MUCH HAVE LA TAXPAYERS PAID IN LAPD LIABILITIES RE: PROTEST EVENTS?" 🧵

Re: Today's ICE Raids in the City of LA As City Controller, we will be formally requesting information from the LAPD to determine the financial impact these ICE raids have had in using City resources, such as the LAPD’s involvement and response to the resulting demonstrations.

Our auditors found multiple instances of roach infestations at affordable housing units. The City’s Housing Department (LAHD) should be able to – but does not – enforce infestations and mold issues through citation.
