some books get hyped organically, by its readers. kudos to them! and then, there are books that are hyped artificially. those i avoid, and you should too. contrived popularity is the death of arts.

here's a thing about me: if i see a book on everyone's TBR or feed, i'm not gonna read it. i have this book, and i could, but i won't. too much publicity is a serious turnoff. currently it's this one. it is everywhere, and it reeks of paid PR.

here's an observation: a short story goes over well in russia or the US. vast spaces make people appreciate shorter forms more, it gives them different perspective. here in europe, people don't get it. every story has to be big, because we're tiny. novels are compensating for our insignificance.

go ten years back in time. do the 1930s. read women fiction written in 1970s and the 80s. the scope is very important. read romance novels, non-fiction, literary essays. make your reading as eclectic as possible. our brains need novelty, yes, but literary newness doesn't only mean brand new books.

women's prize for fiction is exciting, i know, but personally, i'm not a huge fan of literary prizes in general. i don't think our reading should be lead by popularity contests, money, PR etc. some books deserve to be hyped, but some that are - don't. read aginst the grain.
