It’s affirming for Gemma to hear she’s more than just her last name… but Claudia’s not sure she’ll ever rise above her own.

Gemma: Aww. Are you sure you have to edit your paper? Now I just wanna kiss your cute face. Claudia: You won’t want to kiss me if I get a B. Debatable. Then again, these two love debating.

Claudia: Your mom’s name carries weight, you have all the easy outs in the world to make it big, and you’re choosing to do something that isn't easy or glamorous because you 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦. Gemma’s well aware she still comes from a place of privilege, but having her efforts truly seen means the world to her.

Gemma: I get it, but I still think it’s helpful to talk to a professional. There’s free mental health resources on campus, I can send you some links while you finish editing your econ paper- Claudia: Baby, your Nosy trait is showing again. Gemma: You knew what you were signing up for.

Claudia: I mean, that’s what college is about, right? New beginnings. Why can’t I just put that bullshit behind me and move on with my life? Though phrased rhetorically, that’s a question Claudia’s been asking herself for months now.

Gemma: Oh. Well, maybe that therapist just wasn’t a good fit. My aunt Omari is retired now but she still has connections with lots of great therapists. Maybe I could ask for- Claudia: Gem, it’s fine. I’m sick of dwelling on the past. I want to focus on my future.

Gemma: Wait, what? Why didn’t you tell me? Claudia: What’s there to tell? There’s only so many times an old white lady can ask me how being abandoned by my mother and losing everything because of my father made me 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 before you realize you’re wasting time and money.

Gemma: Yeah, I’ve been getting better with balancing that stuff. Rhys helped me come up with a study schedule. Claudia: You’re still seeing that guy? Gemma: Don’t you still see your therapist? Claudia: Nah, I quit therapy like a year ago.

Time for a Girlfriend Mandated Break. The crisp nighttime air is sure to give Claudia’s frazzled brain the refresh it needs for the rest of the work ahead. Claudia: I’m surprised you’re the one who pulled me away from work. Usually 𝘎𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘢'𝘴 the one that needs to be told to take a break.

Now Jade’s the one that isn’t so confident that Claudia’s just going through a rough patch. Let’s add Marina to that list while we’re at it. It could just be exhaustion from staying up all night, but it might take more than gentle denial to help. Vending machine coffee will have to do for now.

Resting her head, Marina shuts her eyes and tries to silence the buzzing in her head. Marina: Yeah… Jade: Are you doing okay, hun? You look beat. Marina: Yeah. Yeah, I’m always okay.

Marina: I…I guess you’re right. Maybe I’m projecting. Sorry. Jade: It’s not a crime to care about your sister. Let’s just keep an eye on her. Sometimes these things just sort themselves out. Though Marina’s usually pretty easy to reassure, she doesn’t look too confident in that plan.

Jade: Do you want my honest opinion? She waits for a nod. Jade: I think maybe because you’ve been taking all these psychology classes, you’re trying to diagnose issues that aren’t there. Claudia’s just going through a rough patch. Marina wants to believe Jade’s optimistic take, she really does…

Marina: But twins can sense this stuff! You’re always connected ‘cause you, like, shared a womb for nine months. You get it. Jade: …Mar-Mar, you know that when Gemma and I call each other our twin, we’re not being literal, right? We didn’t even 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 from the same womb, let alone share one.

Marina: I don’t want to worry Trent. He’s finally getting to live his life, I’m not gonna run to him with every little worry anymore. Jade: Let’s make sure there’s something 𝘵𝘰 worry about first. I mean, you were also up late enough to hear she’s up. What were 𝘺𝘰𝘶 doing up? Marina: …Peeing.

Marina: Jade, I’ve shared a room with her my whole life. That’s definitely not it. Sometimes, really late at night, I hear her in her room moving around and… and I’m just worried she’s still hav- She stops herself. Jade: She’s what? Marina: I don’t think it’s my place to say.

Marina: I dunno, Jade, I feel like something’s wrong with her. More so than usual. You saw those bags under her eyes. Jade: This is a big adjustment. We’re living on our own now, no one’s here to tell us to go to bed. She’s probably just been losing track of time and staying up too late.

Marina: Yeah… I mean, she’s always been kinda like that, real book-y and not very talking to people-y, but Mal’s our friend, and she actually does like Aaron… Even if he kind of took her valedictorian thing from her. Jade: Eh, she probably just wanted alone time with Gemma, you know how it is.

Marina: So… You’ve seen how different Clauds has been acting, right? Jade: Honestly, I’ve hardly seen her at all the past few weeks. When she’s not working or in class, she’s holed up in her room. I didn’t even get a chance to talk to her when Mal and Aaron were in town, she left pretty early.

Despite the rough patch in their high school years (the time period, not the expansion pack), Marina and Jade are as close as two friends can be. Marina’s been so supportive through Jade’s transition. She’s more than happy to lend a listening ear when Marina brings up something serious.

Marina and Jade don’t need to be persuaded to pause their all-nighter. Time for a caffeine break!

Claudia’s still dead tired, but she’s suddenly a lot less frustrated.

Gemma: Uh, why don’t we workshop some more… diplomatic ways to voice your opinion? Claudia: I’ve never been very good at that. Gemma: And I like that about you, but I don’t think your professor will find it quite as charming. Here, how about this? “While I understand your thought process-”

Gemma: Hey, babe? You’ve been working all day. Give your brain a second to breathe. Claudia: I’m fine Gem. I really want to get these discussion posts in. Anyway, is there a professional way to ask someone if they have to take their shoes off to count to twelve?

Gemma: Why don’t we take a quick break? Some fresh air might help. Claudia: The only thing that’d help me right now is a lobotomy so I’d be on equal footing with my classmates. While she’s always snarky, something about Claudia’s tone feels extra harsh to Gemma.

Claudia: Sometimes I wonder how these people manage to get themselves dressed in the morning, let alone get accepted into college. Gemma: Hmm, yeah. Claudia: I think I knew understood the economy more when I was still in 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴 than these bozos do now.

No. There’s no time to sit there and feel sorry for herself. She still needs to respond to these stupid discussion board comments for her econ class. How is she supposed to come up with a good response to a classmate who thinks ‘they should just print more simoleons’ to improve the economy?

It almost makes her resent Gemma, sitting there skimming her notes like she has all the time in the world. It’s probably because she does. She doesn’t have a job, or shitty parents, and she sleeps like a damn baby because her brain doesn’t hate her-

As if she didn’t have enough going against her. Everyone knows she’s Juan Esposito’s kid, so her wanting to get into business already seems dubious. His infamy continues to loom over her like a shadow she just can’t get out from under. She'll have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously.

Claudia wishes she could say the same. Between shifts at the campus coffee shop, a heavy course load, and the fact she’s barely getting any sleep for no reason in particular, Claudia barely has time to breathe, let alone study. She still has to edit an essay, and respond to class discussion posts.

Gemma’s prepared for her exams to a degree where it’s almost obnoxious. She’s studied plenty, but a little more can’t hurt, right? She wants to know everything even remotely useful so she can be the best vet this save file’s ever seen. She was so nervous about college but she’s thriving right now.

Jade feels like she’s been studying how to do makeup her entire life, but there’s so much that she still doesn’t know. She’ll get to take courses more specific to SFX further into her degree but you’ve got to start with the basics of theater before you can get into the nitty gritty.
