This lantern slide shows Chicago’s Garrick Theatre, named after Shakespearean actor David Garrick. The building was built in 1891 as the Schiller Theatre and was designed by the firm Adler & Sullivan. It became a move theatre in the 1930s, but was town down in 1961.

Colorado’s Royal Gorge is near Cañon City and was formed by the Arkansas River. In 1929, entrepreneur Lon Piper built a pedestrian suspension bridge over the gorge.

George Bancroft was a native of Massachusetts, and in in 1834 began publishing his “History of the United States” series. When he finished in 1874, the series was ten volumes, and covered only US history until 1789.

The Nyātāpola Temple in Bhaktapur, Nepal, is the tallest temple in the country. It was completed between 1702 and 1703 and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Siddhi Lakshmi. Its name means “five-story temple.”

Sequoyah was born around 1770 near what is now Knoxville, Tennessee. His best-known achievement was the Cherokee syllabary, the first writing system for a Native American language. Sequoyah could not read or write any other language when he created his system.

Tuskegee University, formerly the Tuskegee Institute, is one of the best-known HBCUs in the nation. Founded in 1881, the campus was designed by Robert Robinson Taylor, the first African American graduate of MIT.

Cawdor Castle in Scotland dates back to around 1380. According to legend, the castle was built by a Thane of Cawdor on a site chosen by a donkey. In medieval Scotland, a Thane was a title held by royal officials. In Macbeth, one of the roles held by the eponymous character is Thane of Cawdor.

Book review: “McKinley, Bryan, and the People” by Paul W. Glad The 1896 election saw William McKinley run against William Jennings Bryan. Paul W. Glad uses this story to show the clash of two American archetypes. One, represented by McKinley, was the self-made man, and was a product of the cities.

On September 27, 1825 – exactly 200 years ago – the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in England. The Stockton and Darlington was the world’s first public railroad to use steam locomotives, marking the birth of modern trains.

The Chicago Women’s Temple (also called the Temperance Temple) opened in 1892. It was the headquarters of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, a group that played a major role in creating Prohibition. This building was demolished in 1926.

Inside this coffin is Horaawesheb, a female incense bearer who lived during Egypt’s 22nd Dynasty (945 BC to 720 BC). This coffin was found in the ancient city of Thebes, which was historically Egypt’s capital. However, when Horaawesheb was alive, the capital was much further north in Bubastis.

Unlike the rest of Southeast Asia, Thailand was never colonized by a European power. Instead, the kings of Thailand were able to convince England and France to maintain Thailand (then known as Siam) intact as a buffer state.

This temple dedicated to the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, can be found at Cape Sounion near Athens. The temple is surrounded on three sides by the sea, giving grand and majestic views. The temple was built in the 440s BC.

Book review: “Acheson: The Secretary of State who Created the American World” by James Chace Dean Acheson played a critical role in managing America’s foreign relations in the early days of the Cold War, but never served as a diplomat.

The castle of Kronborg in Helsingør, Denmark, has existed since the 1420s. Its Renaissance appearance comes from the era of King Frederick II in the 1570s and 1580s. It was destroyed by a fire in 1629 and rebuilt shortly afterward.

Born in Boston in 1711, Thomas Hutchinson served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1758 to 1771 and later served as governor for three years. His career overlaps with the time Massachusetts was becoming the heart of the movement leading to the American Revolution.

Cyrus the Great lived from roughly 600 to 530 BC and founded the Achaemenid Empire. Also called the Persian Empire, it would grow to become the world’s largest empire in its day. Cyrus was known for his tolerance of other cultures and has remained well-respected since his death.

Did you know that today is Constitution Day? The holiday is celebrated every year on September 17, the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. This painting of the event is by Howard C. Christy, an artist best known for his magazine work. The painting has hung in the US Capitol since 1940.

The Spanish-American War has not had a lasting impact on American pop culture, but in its day, it was a popular subject. This 1901 poster is for a melodrama titled “Across the Pacific,” which told the story of a soldier named Willie fighting in the Philippines.

The Old Whaler’s Church in Sag Harbor, New York, is designed in the Egyptian Revival style. Sag Harbor was a major hub for the whaling industry at the time. The church was built in 1844, during a brief period when Egyptian revival architecture was popular in the United States.

Book review: “The Italian Renaissance” by J. H. Plumb This book offers a very brief, cursory overview of the Italian Renaissance. Following about 160 pages of Plumb’s work, the remaining pages are essays by other authors on notable individuals of the era.

The University of Puerto Rico traces its history back to 1900, just after the United States took control of the island during the Spanish-American War. It officially became a public university in 1903.

The only woman in this photo is Nellie Tayloe Ross. She was the wife of William Ross, who served as governor of Wyoming from 1923 until he died in 1924. After his death, a special election was held, and Ross was elected to serve as governor, becoming America’s first woman to hold that office.

The buildings of Paris are one of the most iconic parts of the city, but many don’t realize their true age. Most of medieval Paris was demolished between 1853 and 1870 by Georges-Eugène Haussmann, and the old buildings were replaced by these grand structures.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was also an inventor. He created a self-pasting scrapbook and a history trivia game and invested in several inventions. Many of his ventures were failures, and his books proved to be his only real success.

This photo from the late nineteenth century shows the Ramanathaswamy Temple in India. The temple is devoted to the Hindu god Shiva, and is believed to date to the 1600s. The corridor shown here is believed to be the longest of its kind in India.

N. K. Fairbank built his Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, summer home in 1874. Named “The Butternuts,” it suffered a fire in 1875, and was promptly rebuilt the next year. Fairbank was a Chicago businessman known for his soap and meat packing companies. The home was sadly demolished in 1955.

In the 1920s, Tijuana, Mexico became a popular vacation destination due to Prohibition. While alcohol was illegal in the United States, it flowed freely just over the border. This postcard shows the Agua Caliente, a resort built in 1928 for these travelers.

The Roman statesman Cicero remains one of the most studied figures of the Roman Republic. Cicero played an important role as the leader of Rome after the death of Julius Caesar but was already a well-respected politician before the rise of Caesar.

The Merchants National Bank Building in Winona, Minnesota, was built in 1912 and designed by Purcell, Feick, and Elmslie. That same architectural firm designed almost twenty other bank buildings across the Midwest.

This 1665 print shows the castle of Uraniborg, a Danish observatory founded by Tycho Brahe. The castle was built from 1576 to 1580 and was the last major observatory built without a telescope. The data collected here was used to prove that the Earth orbited the Sun. Uraniborg was abandoned in 1597.

Today is Labor Day, a federal holiday that has been observed since 1894. The holiday is traditionally said to have originated with P. J. McGuire, a leader of the American Federation of Labor. However, there are also claims that Matthew Maguire of the Central Labor Union proposed the idea.

In 1851, the Soldiers’ Home (now the Armed Forces Retirement Home) was created in Washington, D.C. The building shown on the right is the Scott Building, one of the oldest structures at the site. Several presidents, from Buchanan to Arthur, used the cottage on the left as their summer home.

The bald man standing on the speaker platform is Marcus Alonzo “Mark” Hanna, a wealthy businessman from Ohio. In the 1890s, he became closely connected to William McKinley and successfully managed McKinley’s presidential campaigns in 1896 and 1900.

The Haitian Revolution started when enslaved Africans rebelled against the French in 1791, and would not end until 1804. The leader of the revolution was Toussaint Louverture, depicted in this image, who was arrested by the French in 1802 and died in prison in 1803.

This trainwreck occurred in Carter County, Tennessee, in 1915. The train was carrying lumber, but it is unclear what happened to the tracks to cause the derailment.

Gothic Architecture was popular in Europe during the Middle Ages and was commonly used in churches and similar structures. It is characterized by pointed arches. This example is the Monastery of Batalha in Portugal, an example of the “Flamboyant Gothic” style.

Ely Cathedral in England was built with limestone, and according to the official website, monks had to pay 8000 eels each year for the material. The City of Ely was located on an island when the cathedral was built. (1/2)

The Moundville Archaeological Park is one of the largest mound sites from the ancient Mississippian Culture. First mentioned by white travelers in the 1840s, the site dates from the years 1000 to 1450 AD.

The name of the Boise River in Idaho is from French fur trappers and means “wooded.” In 1863, after gold was found in the area, the US Army established Fort Boise along the river. This photograph from 1868 shows the fort’s officers' quarters. (1/2)

A member of one of New York’s most illustrious families, Preserved Fish has one of American history’s more unusual names. His unusual given name is related to the Quakers, and being “preserved from sin.” Fish was a prominent merchant whose firm specialized in whale oil.

The influence of Ancient Egypt was not confined to modern Egypt’s borders. For much of Egypt’s history, the Pharaohs also ruled parts of modern Sudan. This temple is from the Soleb site and was built by Amenhotep the Great. Soleb is one of the best-preserved temples in the region.

This gas station was built in Kassel, Germany, in 1922. It was designed by Hans Barkowsky for Dapolin, a German branch of Standard Oil. Little information is available online about this building’s history, including whether it is still standing.

Book review: “Emma Goldman: American Individualist” by John Chalberg Emma Goldman was known in her day as the “high priestess of anarchy,” and was widely seen as the public face of the movement. While this biography is short, the analysis is not sparse, and Chalberg is able to bring Goldman to life.
