#Onthisday in 1839, the 2nd of 3 massive hurricanes in 1 month struck Gloucester Harbor. Out of all the accounts of vessels wrecked, property destroyed & lives lost, the story that became the most famous was actually not written in Gloucester, & took considerable poetic license.

Last week, The Open Door donated a rare final print of “Zodiac” by Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios to the Cape Ann Museum! This meaningful acquisition, initially identified by the team at the Second Glance thrift store, was previously unrepresented in the Museum’s collection.

The Cape Ann Museum recently acquired a rare oil painting by Fitz Henry Lane (1804–1865) of a floral still life which is undergoing conservation. Lisa Mehlin recently cleaned and revarnished the painting, and the conservator working on the original frame is Wenda Kochanowski.

#HappyBirthday to artist Stephen Salisbury Tuckerman (1830-1904)! Salisbury, as he preferred to be called, lived & painted on Cape Ann during the mid-19th century & also traveled abroad to work in the late 1800s.

#HappyBirthday to artist Stuart Davis (1892-1964)! On this occasion, we’d like to share a new acquisition to the collection—this early view of Gloucester by the American Modernist. Davis continued to reinterpret the work & theories he developed on Cape Ann throughout his life.

#HappyBirthday to artist Leon Kroll (1884-1974)! Kroll was one of the U.S.’s most productive & successful artists of the 20th century. A well-regarded teacher, Kroll was also a central figure in Cape Ann’s summer art colony for many years.

Recently the Cape Ann Museum enlisted the efforts of architectural historian Myron Stachiw and dendrochronologist Bill Flynt to study the tree rings in samples of wood from the Babson-Alling House in order to understand how old various parts of the house are. 🪵🔬

A bit of nostalgia for the Cape Ann Museum’s 2019 Winslow Homer exhibition as we congratulate the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on the opening of their current exhibition “Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer in Watercolor,” on view through January 19, 2026!

Before granite could be processed, it had to be removed from the bedrock by using black powder, dynamite, or wedges known as “feathers.” These blocks were then hoisted from the pit, cut to size, and further finished, by hand or later with mechanical tools like grinders.

This year the Cape Ann Museum’s archival holdings have expanded with new acquisitions, including early church records, navigational books, artifacts, and this colonial 1776 map of Massachusetts Bay. Learn more about the range of new works at bit.ly/47BrhAK. #MapMonday
