Finally found the energy and motivation to begin modelling the new design. Modelling this one from scratch, starting with the side silhouette (hence why the front looks strange). This is just a block out which I will then refine from. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame #blender

Slowly hacking away at the orthographic drawings. Happy with the side profile. Forcing myself to use a thicker brush is definitely helping (by preventing her from getting too detailed). Just the front and arms to go and then to modelling tomorrow. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

Finished her feet. I added two extra toes that are curled back whilst she is walking/running. I plan for her to uncurl them and use all four digits whilst wall running/climbing. She will still have her back limbs, but will draw those when I work on the orthographic drawings.

Refined the design a bit more in the direction I'm after. Essentially I'm going for less segmentation and detail across the board so that I can mass produce other character designs more easily. So far I like it this new look. Just need to finish the feet... #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

Have been ill for like 2 weeks + we had a heatwave here so I have struggled to find any energy. I did however spent some time experimenting with tweaking Eris's design (again), to have more alien proportions, but also simplify her details for easier mass production down the line. Nothing final yet.

Last wall run related update. Added support to wall run moving/rotating surfaces. Climbing also works on such surfaces too. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

Added the ability to enter wall run from a free climb and vice versa. With that the wall run logic is finally complete. Does need animations to provide the feeling of momentum, but this will do for now. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

Core parts of wall running are almost fully complete. Added Wall jumping and refined some parameters. Now it just needs some entry velocity checks and then potentially some optional features like action to action compatibility. I.e climbing -> wall run -> climbing.

Fixed the bug where Eris got stuck on certain angles, but I maaaay have broke the upwards direction check... Oh the joy of programming! #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Bumpy surfaces now mostly work. Does break on that one corner with the bumpy surface, but I can fix that. Wonder if I should add support to wall run from a free climb... #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Added support for running along curved surfaces. The run will auto-exit if the forward curve is too steep, if the upward angle becomes too flat or if the direction is obstructed. Need to run more tests with more natural stone wall like surfaces next. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Working on abilities again. This time wall running. Got the core mechanics in place. Now to work on the ability to run along uneven walls like the free climb ability... No animations yet as I plan to re-rig Eris in the future, so not much point in animating it. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

For my game, I'm contemplating an inverse approach, where you are inside the planet and by looking up you can see the rest of the world in the distance. Made a dirty test concept with geo nodes. Still need to think on how this would impact levels etc as I really don't want to mess with gravity...

Lost time due to preparing for D&D sessions, but the dialogue logic and UI is now mostly working! Next I need to fix a few bugs and add audio. I'll also eventually add actor and camera animations support, but that's a task for further down in development. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Slowly getting there with the dialogue system. Upgraded the editor system to use Unity Localisation instead of my old system. Just need to fix and then fully test some editor UI bits and then I can move on to in-game dialogue UI. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Copied over my old dialogue code... and that's a lot of errors to fix. Mostly localisation and animation related so it seems worse than it is. The editor code will be the biggest pain to update. I'd roll up my sleeves if I had any.

Decided to put together another list, but of some of my favourite games and in one word/sentence... why. Some repeats from the previous one, but mostly new ones.

Icon now displays for free climbing and blocks. I do plan to limit what you can free climb on in a future task (I.e moss, vines etc). This is so the icon isn't always in your face and also allows me to better refine the climbable surfaces. Now to move on to dialogue. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Applied the icons to the mappings and made an input test to try them out. Works perfectly! In the recording you can see me start off with keyboard+mouse and then switch to a Switch controller and then finally to a PS5 controller. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Save/loading logic is finally finished. Took far too long, due to the amount of bugs it exposed and also me procrastinating... Atm you can save any where, but I am considering to limit it to save points in future (or respawn at fixed points). UI is also WIP. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Was going round in circles, trying out different layouts, font sizes and selection styling. Finally landed on something I like. Also moved the UI title to the side going to down the the divider to add to the skewed UI motif. Now to code it... #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

The main themes for my UI are contrasting colors and angles. To acheive the latter, I had to extend the UI system to support skewed scroll views and imagery. Mostly works as intended. Also added support for two UV channels which the basic UI doesn't provide. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Implemented character and scene loading for new game. Set it up so that I can easily change the scene and character for testing purposes. The loading screen is using a mockup map for now, but I intend for it to show the world map. Now to move on to save/load logic. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Got the base state machine and view logic in place. Though getting the button highlight logic to work was a tad annoying due to execution orders with the event system... Now to work on Save data and manager scripts so that those buttons can actually do things. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Reworked the camera logic a bit so that I can support multiple CineCamera setups (Standard, group and aiming). Also needed to implement a custom pan tilt script to support the style of aiming I wanted. Slow progress, but getting there. #indiedev #gamedev #madeinunity

Attack ability refactor finished and now supports primary and secondary equipment forms (Sword slash vs Bow aim and fire). Still a lot of work to do on the bow ability, but the ground work is pretty much there! #indiedev #gamedev #madewithunity

Just noticed an annoying character/cam stutter that is only really visible from the side. Video shows root motion driven physics in the first half and non-root driven physics in the latter. Seems using the delta position from the animator is what is producing this... rather aggrevating... #gamedev

Been slowly working on the bow and arrow logic. Got the weapon form switching logic working... but soon realised I need to refactor/rework how the attack abilities work so that it can support the seperate form and potentially different equipment types in future... #indiedev #gamedev #madewithunity

Block logic finished. They now fall to gravity and also check for valid character positions. Also moved to fixed animation increments instead of free movement as I wanted to avoid situations where players could create pit traps (though need new anims for this later) #indiedev #gamedev #madewithunity

One of the things I've been meaning to do for a while is to split Eris's animations into NLA tracks and export them as seperate FBXs. Seems to work quite nicely. Another bonus is I can export specific ranges of my animations for easier maintenance. #indiedev #blender #unity

Fixed the arrow feathers. Less lines and is now sharing the hair properties. This time a spin around in a test environment (this is a store asset for visual tests). I think I will do some environment concepting next (I'm totally am not putting off programing...) #indiedev #gamedev #unity #blender

Bow equipment textures are now complete. Happy with most of it, but the feathers on the arrows need reworking as the lines are too think looking. #unity #blender #gamedev #indiedev

Bow form and quiver meshes and rig are finished. Just needs retexturing. Quite happy with how it turned out. However I did need to make the arrows have an extending shaft as her arms are quite long and I didn't want a large quiver. #indiedev #gamedev #blender

Just a mockup of the inner workings of the sword/bow. Adding a hidden bridge in the guard to serve as the mechanism for the transformation. Also mocked up the arrows and quiver. Going with a needle look for the arrows to match Eris's overall design. #indiedev #gamedev

I do want to add bow mechanics to my game. So have been contemplating if her sword should be able to turn into a bow or if it should be a seperate weapon entirely. Not fully decided on it yet... #blender #indiedev #gamedev.
