It's great that in Python everything is passed by reference and even bultin objects like ints are fully mutable, otherwise you wouldn't be able to easily implement a function to increment/decrement things like this since the called function could only modify its own internal copy of the value.

If Guido didn't want me to mess with other people's stack frames he wouldn't have made code objects be a thing.

Defining the "modal fragment" to be wildly different to actual modal logic in so many ways because if you squint really hard and pretend its an entirely different and evaluated over other structures its kinda modal-ish and definitely not because I just need it to be that way for my argument to work.
