Added a turn order calculation based on actors dexterity and a random % variation as well as a simple attack evade calculation based on the dexterity gap between the attacker and defender. 1/2 Nerd speak alert! Working with such limited resources as with the NES forces you to be creative. Collisions used to loop through: collidable tiles, trigger tiles and NPCs: 3 whole loops before we even started moving, and if an NPC had decided to start moving that same frame, that was doubled!

Woke up to one of our playtesters reporting a 1-frame hitch on vertical scrolling. Started digging and ended up scrapping the code for NPC movement and sprite updates completely and starting from scratch. For one annoying frame. #gamedev is hard 😅

The NES launched in NA this day, 40 yrs ago. I got mine for my 7th bday in 1987. I remember coming back from school and seeing the big box, gift wrapped, on the kitchen table and later setting it up with my dad. One of my fondest childhood memories and my most prized possession. Happy bday, NES. 🥳

Made the map layer transition better. Here's what it looks like in dungeons! Each section is a "layer" stored as a standalone map. The transition happens in 2 phases: flood-fill of an area of interest, then spiral fill for the rest of the screen. #nesdev #jrpg #thebookofrynn

Ngl this was a giant PITA but we now have a map layer system with progressive flood-fill reveal. The only thing I'm not happy with is that it's 25% slower than I wanted, mainly because of the way the VRAM buffer is handled by the library. I'll eventually replace said library but for now, it'll do.

I copied the map editor and slowly turned it into a sprite editor! It's got basic drawing tools and canvas resize. Imports 16 indexed color PNGs mapped to 4 subpalettes, output is a CHR file of all the tiles in the canvas. I can even preview animations by specifying regions of the canvas as frames.

When my brain needs a break from coding I draw little character sprites and honestly I think it's my fav thing to do. Here is a scribe. In The Book of Rynn, scribes are responsible for saving your game, healing status effects and raising your fallen party members! #nesdev #nes #8bit #retrograming
