THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE (35MM) - For all of its structural conventions, Mona Fastvold’s 18th century folk musical is a gorgeously surreal religious fable. Song and dance as euphoric (and often rapturous) autonomy to cope with a broken world. Amanda Seyfried is phenomenal.

FRANKENSTEIN (35MM) - Jacob Elordi gives such a soulful performance, which sadly exacerbates the lack of thematic nuance. I love Del Toro’s work, but here he draws such an easily defined line between man and monster that there’s little room for one to challenge the other.

HIGHEST 2 LOWEST - Spike Lee transformed Kurosawa’s classic crime drama into a satirical odyssey where the beauty of New York reminds an ivory tower artist why he fell in love with the music. Don’t really understand the ambivalence. I thought this was a damn good time.

THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US - Transforming the Gill Man into a tragic land-breathing figure with the build of Tor Johnson would be more effective if it were the central thrust of the movie instead of being relegated to the last 19 minutes.

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE - Gill Man did nothing wrong! I watched this alone in my apartment and cheered when he threw a guy against a palm tree. What murdah?!

RE-ANIMATOR (35MM) - I love me some good splatstick. I’m always so drawn in by how confidently Jeffrey Combs enters the movie with that determined gaze. No mad scientist list would be complete without Herbert West.

GHOSTBUSTERS (70MM) - We’ve gotten so hung up on this movie’s place as a pop culture fixture that we underplay how much it’s all about sex. The supernatural opens a libidinous gateway of dripping ectoplasm, rapturous summoning rituals and SNL funny people shooting their streams.

Just to keep the fun going, the @somervilletheatre.bsky.social is having a GODZILLA marathon in a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to do this all again.

BUGONIA (35MM) - Laughed a whole bunch during Yorgos Lanthimos’ sick little dark comedy about the desperate conspiracy psychosis we’re just stuck with now and the cruelty it breeds. A certified hate letter to humanity. Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone are equally excellent here.

CHILD’S PLAY 2 (35MM) - I’ve seen this movie so many times now but it was a treat to finally experience it on the big screen, especially with Kyle herself, Christine Elise, in attendance. The escalating Good Guy Factory chase is so much fun and an all-timer horror climax.

Making the first 8 FRIDAY THE 13TH movies for free on YouTube would a nice Halloween treat if not for the fact that every one of them are heavily censored TV edits that cut out the language/gore. FINAL CHAPTER Jason just falls on the floor after Tommy whacks him in the face 🖕

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (70MM) - You really can’t underestimate how majestic those last 30 minutes are. Mystery persists within the awe of first contact. The easiest answers Spielberg allows are emotional ones, and even those are complicated at their core.

PEEPING TOM - The past six decades of horror history within a single trailblazing film that’s so transparently clairvoyant of the genre’s future. It still feels so thorny and quietly perverse about that line between sex and violence. I loved seeing this in a theater.

ERNEST SCARED STUPID (35MM) - It’s ARMY OF DARKNESS for kids. Jim Varney’s elastic mugging leads a bizarre and deeply corny, yet fun as hell gateway horror comedy that only could have existed in 1991. Not to mention the troll costume looks awesome.

Drink (?) your Miak, folks.

THE MASTERMIND - It’s exactly what you would expect a Kelly Reichardt heist movie to look, sound and feel like in all the best ways. Few capture strategic tedium like she does, with a hilariously pathetic art thief played by Josh O’Connor at the center of his own alienation.

BLACK PHONE 2 - The snowy sequel to Scott Derrickson’s surprise 2021 hit is a meandering hodgepodge of different horror pastiches that rarely manifest into something scary. The Grabber is in no way comparable to Freddy Krueger beyond his superficial presence.

In space, no one can hear you carve.

THE CONJURING: LAST RITES - A fun scare involving the Duke, MEGA Annabelle and the religious psychosis of the Warrens’ crusade nearly tip the scales into camp territory, but Michael Chaves can’t help but get in his own way with a bloated and bafflingly paced series retrospective.

TRON: ARES - Not even the intense thrum of a new NIN album being blared over IMAX speakers can make up for a largely tedious sequel with some dazzling visuals and not an ounce of soul behind them. Hard to believe it took 15 yrs to come up with Jared Leto as techno PINOCCHIO.

ROOFMAN - Derek Cianfrance’s latest brilliantly feeds its nostalgic landmarks into a touching and achingly melancholic family drama about the systemic factors that keep a kind-hearted criminal trapped in a cycle of self-destruction. Gorgeously shot too.

THE HAUNTED PALACE - The company of Corman, Poe, Lovecraft and Price present a deliciously gothic tale of magic, murder and possession. I’m an easy mark for sets that are 70% fog. Corman may have worked on the cheap, but he knew how to make each location look like a million bucks

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1999) - Like its predecessor, the stylish Dark Castle remake is comfort food for the horror soul. Greg Nicotero and Robert Kurtzman are as much the stars as the elaborate production design. William Castle would have been so proud.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER (70MM) - I can’t get over how good Penn is as this psychosexual grunt. He struts into every scene like an action figure that’s been wished to life by the most racist kid on the block. It’s a great physical performance that elicits so much menace and pity.

ANEMONE - Roman Day-Lewis’ dreadfully dull directorial debut wants to establish itself as a visual treatise on the encompassing melancholy clouding a regretful father, yet never feels as if it escaped the conceptual stage. Even Daniel Day-Lewis is sadly left floating in the wind.

THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2 - Renny Harlin’s stagnant middle chapter is just as awful as CHAPTER 1 but in whole new ways. There’s little passion in this beyond Madeleine Petsch’s physical performance. Sure is a feat to make a feature-length chase movie this listless and unmemorable.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER (VistaVision) - Privileged to have witnessed one of the rarest screenings of this year’s theatrical event. The open matte panorama of PTA’s new American epic presents the magnificent scope of what lies ahead and the shaky ground we’re all speeding down.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER - Paul Thomas Anderson’s propulsive revolution epic magnifies the necessity of communal protection in dire times. It’s such an exciting jolt to the studio system in just about every way on account of an artist with a spine. I can’t wait to see this again.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - The definitive PTA horror movie. An opportunistic parasite scours the resources of hell until they’re indistinguishable from one another. All presented through an apocalyptic fury as horrifying as it is breathtaking. It’s a perfect movie.

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE - It warms my heart to know my first PTA is still able to surprise me. Reaffirms love as a cosmic force that flourishes among the world’s numerous antagonizers. The lesson here is to find someone who will lean in while you yap about your special interests.

APOLLO 13 (IMAX) - The liftoff/space material is still stunning, but I’ve always been more attuned to the NASA crew’s problem solving under pressure. That brief moment where Ed Harris privately lets his emotional guard down after having to play the stern captain is so satisfying.

ANNABELLE COMES HOME - It turns out what the CONJURING-verse needed was a sleepover horror movie about some teenagers being tormented by a room of haunted artifacts under the command of their porcelain ringleader. Plenty of fun scares and it’s surprisingly sweet.

THE RETURN: PARTS 17/18 - Wished I could have come for the whole marathon, but getting to see the finale in a theater brought me back to the night it aired. It takes nerve for Lynch to blow the show wide open with an episode and a half to go. Forever haunted by Sheryl Lee.

HIM - So unserious. Justin Tipping’s Faustian football horror-thriller can’t live up to its ambitions, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a hoot. It’s clearly supposed to be funny (and often is), with Marlon Wayans giving a gonzo performance I couldn’t look away from.

WISHMASTER - I’ve learned that it’s pretty impossible for me to not a have good time with a Robert Kurtzman-led VFX showcase with wall to wall goopy, gory mayhem. Sprinkle in a who’s who of horror icons camping it up and you’ve got a damn fun slasher movie.

Was reminded that today is the 9 year anniversary of the time I filled every poster slot of the campus movie theater with one sheets for NINE LIVES.
