Cold and lots of Sun today. High today is 18°. Worse, single digit lows for the few nights. Warming shelters remain open in both counties. Don't be afraid to use them. Power slowly coming back as crews work tirelessly. Give tree and power crews some room and check in friends and loved ones.

This afternoon: Temperatures are beginning to fall. Precip is ending for the most part, however some light snow showers could pass through as the system pulls away. WIND is a big deal. The gusts are going to deal another blow to trees and power lines. (1/2)

Critical reminders about generators from MTE, but apply to NES customers also. Generator backfeed is a life threatening problem to power crews. Backfed power isn’t just 120v, it goes through your transformer, which steps it up to many thousands of volts on the distribution lines.

Information for Williamson Co: Williamson County Emergency Management Agency is opening warming shelters at Fairview High School and Franklin High School. Limited food and animal support services will be available. We'll pass along anything that comes over their socials.

1/2) NWS Nashville: "Wind gusts between 15-25 mph will be likely today and through most of the day tomorrow. These winds will exacerbate trees and powerlines that are weighed down with ice. Coupling this with a big drop in temperatures tonight means a flash freeze will be possible...

A Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from midnight tonight thru 6p Monday for wind chills as low as 0° to -5°. An Extreme Cold Warning will then go into effect starting 6p Monday thru noon on Tuesday. Wind chill values will be as cold as -10° during this time.

Some tips on staying warm for those without power. Check in on your neighbors, especially those that may be elderly or have medical issues.

We are concerned with the temp drop that's going to start late this morning. Things may improve for a bit then get worse as winds increase and temps drop. Those with and without power should be thinking about their stay warm plan. Overnight low is 8°.

Ned gives, Ned takes. He's the reason for freezing rain vs. snow. He's also the reason we might get a break from freezing rain. It's 10 whole degrees warmer (ºC) at about 5500 ft. Warmer water is falling on the surface. This helps.

We could use some measurements of the ice on surfaces if you can do so safely. Here's a helpful graphic on how to do that from your friendly neighborhood NWS Office. Be careful, it's probably pretty slippery out side your house. Make sure you include your location! Use #tspotter.

Additional freezing rain is expected today. We HOPE BEYOND HOPE that a some of us will get above 32º today. This would help to shed some ice from trees and lines, but it's not going to be the case for everyone. Please stay off the roads and away from trees if you can help it. 100k+ without power.

About 12% of NES customers without power now, about 60,000 meters.

Latest estimates show 29,186 NES customers without power (about 6% of customers) and 3,248 MTEMC customers without power in Williamson Co. (about 3% of customers). These numbers have increased significantly since I woke up an hour or so ago.

June Tune Airport is reporting 32°. BNA 31°. Smyrna 31°, with Maury and Marshall Counties 32°. If we can reach 32°, this could at least slow the rate that ice is accumulating. But, surfaces are awfully cold out there.

Over 9200 NES meters without power, and this number has escalated quickly.

4:15 am, Rain continues to fall and freeze on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces. Power outages and tree damage have commenced. The rain will continue to accumulate on trees and power lines through the morning and end this afternoon. (1/2)

Latest from NWS Nashville: "The radar is starting to fill in with more significant freezing rain lifting into southern Tennessee. Expect this heavier precipitation to continue through the morning. We'll also continue to watch where the above freezing temperatures can make it. Unfortunately, (1/3)

Fun fact: The warmest temp we've had all day at BNA is....right now. We'll likely hit our high for the day at 11:59 pm. At my house, it's 22.8°, which is today's high so far in the back yard.

11:19 pm, our next round of freezing rain is headed our way from N MS. This batch of freezing rain has been responsible for power outages down that way, with some counties reporting 40-60% of their customers without power. Something we'll need to watch through the overnight through tomorrow.

NEW: Cold Weather Advisory will go into effect Sunday night at midnight and expire at noon Tuesday. NWS: "Very cold wind chills as low as 0 to 10 below expected. The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken."

The latest HRRR model continues to show our "lull" filling in after midnight, and steady freezing rain falling from about 1am until noon tomorrow. This event is not over. The first round is. Second round yet to come.

Latest HRRR believes liquid freezing rain will become more steady after midnight tonight and continue through the night and Sunday morning. Loop ends at 11am with freezing rain still falling. I I, for one, hope this is wrong.

We could use reports for the onset of freezing rain. Right now all we're looking for is a glaze of clear ice on surfaces. If you see it, let us know using #tspotter. These reports help NWS Nashville make decisions about warning and forecasting. Thanks!

Current expectations: Snow north of 840. Sleet S of 840. Sleet line will creep north for the next 3-4 hours. Transition to liquid freezing rain this evening (booo) for all of us. This is where real trouble begins for trees/electrical infrastructure. Surface temps *may* warm just above (1/2)

Refresher on what we call "warm-nose Ned." Surface temps below freezing. A mile or so up, temps warm above freezing causing snow to melt. How strong that warm-nose is (because it kinda looks like a nose on graphs) determines sleet or freezing rain. If it's weak, sleet. If it's more pronounced, (1/2)

Just passed the 1" snow accumulation mark at my house. To measure snow, use a ruler on a hard surface (not grass!) away from structures. Send pictures of the snow measurement along with location using #tSpotter. (1/2)

Current thinking on accumulation. Right now several short term models predict about 2-3" of snow. Then between .25-.75" of ice. This will make things, um... difficult for us. Difficult for tree limbs and power lines, and very difficult for roads. Then, dangerously cold overnight temps.

Upper air sounding shows 3 elements we're watching today. NED (warm nose), Dry Air Monster (he eats snow), and snow zone where snow is falling. Right now DAM is in charge. But soon he'll disappear and we'll get snow on the ground. Then, Ned will move to right, cross the freezing line.

Been looking at radar for about an hour. Dry Air Monster is munching snow above us like a champ. But he'll be full soon. OHX launched their balloon a bit ago and report that it's below 32 all the way up and largely dry. Dew points will rise, saturation will occur, and then you'll see snow.
