Visma’s training methods probably did make Yates retire. Not because they’re bad but because Visma makes all the decisions about training. Which is the norm in any other team sport btw and works incredibly well for Visma‘s performance, including Yates. But if you’re used to freedom, it may be hard.

To me, by far the most interesting sentence in this thing is Brennan saying "We kind of have this long-term ambition of going to the Tour in 2027". Jonas is probably still going to be doing the Tour in 2027. Meaning unlike for Kooij, they do have a clear vision for Brennan in a Van Aert-like role.

Seen a lot of suggestions that Visma missed out on Onley or Gee in hindsight. I don't think those guys would have made any sense for Visma. Visma already have someone who delivers incredibly consistent GC results. Paying several million for someone additional who gives worse results is not worth it.

I'm not too shocked, everything considered. Moving on from Jayco likely already signalled that the spark was dying. At Visma though it felt like he never really came to terms with their very prescriptive, systematic way of operating. And having reached all his goals, it probably was the right time.

This is a big surprise and a sad one, but I wish him all the best 💛 So glad to have been able to cheer for him while he was riding away on Finestre and to have celebrated him for an unexpected but highly deserved Grand Tour victory.

I‘m sure that’s going to convince him to spend time away from his family and train up for a late season peak for a one-day race, after coming off a Giro-Tour schedule 🙃

6 million buyout, on top of whatever they are paying him as salary. The Remco buyout was reportedly 7 million, Ayuso was 10 million. Onley is not as good as either of those riders, especially Remco. They could have easily gotten Kooij for that money. Who'd have probably been a way bigger asset.

To be clear, I don't think this is a bad transfer for Ineos. But I also think it is the kind of transfer that reflects the big issue with their team. They want to be a GC team, but they don't have a top 3 GC star. Onley is not that, but close. Which means he's EXPENSIVE. And he won't be enough.

This was one of the most horrific crashes in the pro peloton this year and it was barely talked about. It happened off screen, luckily I suppose, so we didn't have to see it. But hearing riders that saw it talk about it afterwards made me nauseous. So glad he is recovering.

I think it is reasonable for the UCI to scrutinize him. The outward image of fairness is an important aspect of any sport and everytime he races, people's reaction is "this can't be legal". Which in itself is of course no reason for sanction, but there ARE equipment rule violations in his set-up.
