HG Friday: To make up for yesterday being too easy, I worked 2 hours mucking and hauling & dumping wheelbarrows. Amanda told me she is leaving in two months for cheaper stables in San Dimas and I am :( Too many horse people are leaving, and more stables will be turned into bland housing. #horses

And this year I got a notice from the DMV that I need to renew my license. In big bold letters, TWICE, it states that I have to go in person. Is this worse than jury duty? Because I also got that letter. #happynewyear

Happy New Year Horsegirl: Yes I mucked in the rain. Felt bad about missing yesterday, so I helped Amanda out for an hour but she is just as fast as I am. All done. No one can ride in the mud, nothing horsey left to do until tomorrow. Is this the Year? Will Megan finally get her pony? #yearofthehorse

HG Tuesday: Last lesson on Kiwi :( It was a cool drizzly day w/ lots of riders, & one of them told my trainer I have good posture. Brina is the reason I ride well, have good seat, all that. We didn't have to beg the mare for speed, she was excited & had to be pulled back. I will miss her. #horses

HG Weekend: Most stables since the rain are slip-and-slides so I did not ride, I mucked in the morning chill. My hands were numb & barely worked. In addition to shoveling manure, I groomed muddy Patrick the mini. He is so shaggy this time of year, it was like brushing a 100 lb. hamster. #horses

HG Friday: Soaked except for my feet, thanks to these Ariat work boots. I was excited to see a new horse in Murphy's stall but it's just a boarder, not a new therapy horse. Working in the rain does not bother me but it got too dangerous for wheelbarrows as the hills turned to river ruts. #horses

2025 was an eventful year, but I can't talk about work. My free time was packed with horse stables and I filled a sketchbook with ballpoint drawings and I roadtripped to Colorado with Roz, again. I rode a mechanical bull, I got Covid, I played in the snow, I swam, I did my best. #yearendwrapup

HG Tuesday: It's hard to describe that elation of speeding on a thoroughbred. She was in rare spirits due to cool weather so the mare took off on the fastest trot I have ever ridden- what a blast! I had forgotten extended trot can be faster than canter, and she proved it. Easy, girl! #horses

HG Thoughts: Super busy week, what with Real Job and Farm Job and that big holiday coming up. It's been affecting my memory and I keep forgetting this & that. It's not cute. So today I will just focus on- what's that? I have to make broccoli casserole for Xmas eve? And we're eating at 2 pm?? #stress

HG Tuesday: Fast canter on the mare, really fun until we did diagonals across the arena. Picture a huge figure 8 but the trick is 1) keeping the horse on a straight line across the dirt and 2) changing lead legs in the middle. Lots of transitions to trot & back up to lope, a "simple change." #horses

HG Thoughts: My hyper fixation on all things horse is a perfect parallel to when I was a kid and got my first aquarium. I became obsessed with fish & read every book I could find and daydreamed about fish tanks and what new species I could acquire. It lasted for decades, & I still have a tank. #pets

Horsegirl Thoughts: Riding Buck today, it was all western reining & not the two-handed English style I prefer. The cues are different and I want to use English but it confuses the horse. I sometimes think I should make the leap to Full English riding but then I would have to buy those pants. #horses

HG Thoughts: I read (well, skimmed) an article that explained how do-gooders are hated because talking about charity work makes them unlikeable. Whoops. That was never my jam, I just love talking about ranch work because it's fun & I look forward to it all week. Genuinely cringing at my gaff.

HG Wednesday: They fired the Compton guy, so I was needed at the therapy stables. Two hours of huffing and puffing, I was done in... it sucks that he is gone, but I must look really good at this point. One whole year of solid volunteer work, someone should just give me a pony. #horses

HG Tuesday: Back on the thoroughbred, wearing myself out on my day off. I need to get all the riding in before my trainer retires, so no holding back- hard canter and trot and lateral movement and all the exhausting stuff that builds core muscles. So tired now. Muscles healing and knitting. #horses

HG Sunday: My cowboy hat finally has a purpose: line dancing. All this time I was trying to figure out when to wear it since I ride with a helmet. We used to hit up the cowboy dance club nearby, & last night I relearned some of the moves. Plus my fancy belt I never wore before- it's a Look. #cowgirl

Cowgirl Milestone: I rode a mechanical bull tonight, and I really stayed on. Twice! Still dizzy :)

HG Saturday: My western trainer has moved her operation over to the Nearby Stables so no more Cowboy Ranch. I rode Stella in the big arena and we had to shout to hear each other over the road traffic. It's nice to consolidate trainers and horses into one place, but Cowboy Ranch is soon to be houses.

HG Friday: Back on the farm, feeling once again like I missed my calling in life. #horses

Horsegirl Woes: My favorite trainer is leaving the Fancy Pants horse stable and taking her thoroughbred with her :( Kiwi who is the best horse to ride, will be available for lessons at Far Away Location and I am not happy about that drive. Tough choice- New trainer or long drive? #horses

HG Tuesday: More and more I have been granted independence in my lessons- grooming, tacking, leading, and now even lunging all by myself. The trainer might still chime in, but I am working up to full autonomy with the goal of owning my own horse. I have to be ready for anything, even colic. #horses

HG Sunday: Somehow I was able to sleep last night with the noise my neighbors inflict on the world. Right outside my window at 2 am, laughing and slamming car doors, life's a party. I was on land.com looking for horse properties again- the house could be a single-wide on a farm and I'd be happy.

HG Friday: Sad news. When I got to the Therapy Stables one of the stalls was empty and strangely clean. Murphy died. She was only 15 but got impaction colic just before Thanksgiving so they let her go. This is a real risk with the weather changing and not drinking as much water...poor gal. #horses

Horsegirl Tuesday: I am wiped out from riding in two point position. It was Buck at the Cowboy Ranch and he is just doing his job...while I stand in a crouched posture in the stirrups. We didn't lope or anything crazy but imagine keeping that pose for half an hour. #horses

Horsegirl Friday: Mucking in the rain again, this time not fun because I was caught off guard with no hat. But under the covered stalls with the rat-a-tat on the corrugated roof, it's like being a kid on the playground again- hiding under the steel "rocket" or whatever metal structure we had. #rain

Horsegirl Wednesday: Today's ride was magical. The afternoon light in the canyon, all the people lunging and riding their horses, the acrobats doing vaulting on the horse with the surcingle. It was like a party before the next rain, and the mare was happy to run. All of us, so much fun. #horses

Horsegirl Thoughts: It was a crisp 47 F on the farm but the sun made it lovely (a rare concept) and the horses blew steam in the dawn light. I have overcome my fear of the giant named Oliver who never comes at me now, so maybe it's true they can hear our heartbeats. Everyone is shaggy and damp.

HG Tuesday: Yes, it stopped raining but the round pens are flooded so she cancelled the lesson. Can't ride a horse w/o lunging first, so I'm told. Can someone just give me a horse at this point? I will walk it like a dog, I don't even care. Mud builds character...and golems. #horses

Horsegirl Sunday: Back on the heavily saturated farm, everything was puddles except the lower arena which was a lake. Once again I cleaned all the stalls but it was no longer raining so I dunno what I'm bragging about. It was my dream to work with horses & this proves I am dedicated, there. #horses

Horsegirl Saturday: I did NOT pussy out, but got to the farm in pouring rain at 7:30 and Melissa was surprised to see me. In the deluge I cleaned ALL the stalls and it was honestly fun for me because I was not hot and sweaty. And my Ariat work boots I got for this very job? My feet are DRY. #horses
