I’ve finally finished processing a dream skull of mine: the American black bear. This skull is now officially property of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and was handled/processed with the proper permits

My poor baby Snowball had to have a tumor removed today and is recovering from her surgery. She’s mostly out of the anesthesia fog and hates her cone and is feeling very needy ☹️

Everywhere I go I’m moving lizards. It’s my office day and as soon as I came in, this baby alligator lizard was in the building, next to the elevator. It did not want to stay in the hand but instead used me like a tree before being placed outside under a succulent

It’s that time of year where my house is full of critters. I’ve relocated 5 of these little desert night lizards out of my garage and kitchen just in September alone

Well, just found out that Snowball has a mast cell tumor and has to get it removed next month. This on the anniversary of learning my brother’s cancer was terminal. Her surgery also falls during a trip I was looking forward to, so those plans are cancelled.

This is very silly but I made a Pusheen cake for my friend’s birthday and I’m pretty proud of how it came out. This is my petition to bring back homemade looking cakes instead of the crazy realistic ones. I miss the simplicity of a cake decorated at home with little real skill

I’ve been redoing what used to be my brother’s room in a way that matches my vibe and pays tribute to him. I set up a console tower of all the game systems we used to play, his guitar is hung on the opposite wall, live plants and dried flowers of bouquets given to me after his death on another

Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card. Did you know a lot of libraries let you get a card, even if you don’t live in that city, county, or state? California public libraries allow all CA residents to apply for library cards for free. Some allow out of state folks to get one for a fee

I had a bad bitch afternoon. Bad bitches go to their local harm reduction offices and grab some free narcan in case of emergencies, go to as many libraries as they can to get new library cards, and sell some clothes to the trendy second hand store before grabbing a little coffee.

I’ve been hearing a lot of beeping around my yard lately and finally laid eyes on the creatures responsible for it. I have a couple of ladder-backed woodpeckers that have been visiting the Joshua tree to eat its fruits. Oh to be a little bird who beeps and eats.

The owls have returned and I have began drafting plans for a nest platform for them. Also in talks with my coworkers at fish and wildlife on potential raven deterrents just to keep em out of my yard

I finally caught my favorite yard visitor! Couldn’t get my bathroom window open without risking spooking the poor thing but AAAAAAAAAAH

One of my coworkers decorates his desk with these little plunderlings and he let me hang out with one today. Except he went home before I could give him back so now the little guy is gonna have a week long adventure with me!

If I had a nickel for every book in April I read about an infertile woman kidnapping a kid while her husband begrudgingly acts as an accessory only to do the right thing at the end, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t much, but weird that it happened twice. (Both books this was the plot twist!)

Time to watch The Last of Us and be heartbroken over what I know is coming in the series and also over the fact that my brother isn’t here to watch it with me. We bonded a lot over the games and season one

Me: This book is good so far, I’m just gonna read like 5 chapters and go to bed Also me: *accidentally reads 200 pages and finishes the book in one sitting*

Found some really sick crystals out in Blythe. I dunno what they are but they’re cool and live in my house now

What a beautiful sight for a spring morning

My library holds and ThriftBooks order came in at the same time, as well as a Libby hold, and I dug some books out of my “to donate” pile, and I snagged a book from the windowsill library at my work, and put that on top of my active TBR. I guess I know what my April is gonna look like.

One of my friends suggested my next potholder be a tulip poplar leaf and that was a perfect suggestion, 10/10 I’m obsessed.

My bestie’s birthday is coming up so I’m making her a gift basket of jams and jellies, some cute fruit trinkets, and I’m currently sewing her some leaf shaped pot holders. I’ve got one done so far!

Driving through my neighborhood and I saw what may have been a bird or may have been a decoration. Turns out my neighbor just has a northern flicker hanging out at their house like it’s no big deal 😤

I dreamed of having a yard with Joshua trees in it. My biggest Joshua tree is in bloom right now and it’s so stunning.

Today my brother would have been 36 years old. He died exactly 6 weeks before his birthday. I miss him so much.

Today one of my coworkers almost died making his commute into work. Thank goodness he’s okay and we state workers only have a mandatory 2-day in office week/3 day WFH. In other news, today Governor Gavin Newsom announced his elective order to force state workers into office 4-days per week.

This book feels like it was made for 12 year old me. I was obsessed with wolf books and this is the exact book I would have devoured. I will not lie, I cried really hard reading this.

Finished reading my 11th book of the year. So many of these stories were weirdly endearing, maybe King is getting soft in his age. I fully believe with my whole chest that the story “Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream” should be made into a movie. Such an enjoyable read.

One of the best things about my house is the resident great horned owl. It spends mornings in my neighbor’s pine, taking refuge in a raven’s nest, and in the evenings it hangs out in the Joshua tree next to my bedroom. I get to hear its gentle hooting in all hours of darkness

Someone gave my parents a peace lily, good intentions but not knowing that my mum doesn’t *do* plants. The left pic is what this sad lily looked like when I snatched it from her house, the right pic is what it looks like now, less than 24 hours in my care 😂

I can’t believe tomorrow it’ll already be a week since my brother died. It feels so weird doing normal activities, like getting ready to go back to work, instead of wallowing in grief
