USS Nimitz aircraft carrier set to depart Puget Sound for the last time ever tomorrow. For those interested, the ship is headed out to the east coast for deactivation and eventual scrapping. Carriers usually come and go at high tide so it'll likely be around 7am.

The Peter Iredale was a ship that ran aground during a storm on the Oregon coast in 1906 near Astoria. The ship was caught in heavy winds and driven onto the beach, where the crew safely abandoned it. Although salvage efforts recovered some materials, the hull was left in place.

This BFC recently moved from the east coast to the PNW. It is currently down in Olympia undoing modifications made so it could pass through the Panama Canal. Soon it will be relocated to Seattle. It was used to construct both the Tappan-Zee Bridge in New York as well as the Bay Bridge in Oakland.

I'd already seen 4 Concordes and every SR-71 by the time I got to see my 1stMiG-25 Foxbat in Kyiv. Such a rare and special thing. The only MiG-25 in the U.S. (that we know of) is currently on display at the USAF museum in Ohio, an incomplete example that was found buried in Iraq.

The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was built in 1915. On August 6, 1945, it stood almost directly below the atomic blast when the “Little Boy” bomb was dropped; most of the building was destroyed, but its steel dome and the concrete core of the building remained standing.
