Come discover the verse of Paul Laurence Dunbar with Dr. Susie Paul at The NewSouth Bookstore on Tuesday, starting at 5:30pm. Dunbar was the first African American to gain acclaim as a poet/novelist, giving voice to the Black experience and paving the way for the Harlem Renaissance.

We loved welcoming a few wonderful students from AUM at The NewSouth Bookstore last week. They were engaged and genuinely excited to explore our shelves. What meant the most to us was how intentional they were about wanting to shop local and support an independent bookstore. Thank you!

At just 169 pages Y'all Come by W. Bradley Twitty, a biography of Alabama's "Big Jim" Folsom, packs a punch. It captures the outsized character and footprint in Alabama of Governor Jim Folsom. Too bad we only have one copy, but ours is signed by Folsom and has a photo affixed to the inside cover.

We could not get bestselling author Joseph J. Ellis to the bookstore with his newest book, The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding. Gabbi Emerson on our team suggested a Q&A with him, and he personally engaged with her. Check out their Q&A on our website!

We learned last week that Joyce Vance has to postpone her talk scheduled for Nov. 18. We should have a new date shortly. Vance regrets having to change the date. Watch our social media, newsletter, and website for an announcement about the revised program date.

If Karren Pell and her musician buddies at the Old Alabama Revue are playing at The NewSouth Bookstore, it’s gonna be a great time. The music is always various and fun. They’ll be with us again on Thursday of this week, that’s October 30 at 5:30pm, for a Halloween special. Come in costume, or not!

Joshua and Emily Bradford, managers of the Eastbrook Flea Market & Antique Mall cheerfully rounded up enough cups and saucers for us to serve guests at our Thursday, December 4 Jane Austen event, a program we’ve arranged to celebrate the author’s 250th birthday.

It was an evening of poetry and music last Tuesday, stunning in its power and beauty. The project titled The Myth of Water: Go Into Your Life by Jeanie Thompson and Larry Mitchell hauntingly brought Helen Keller’s world to life and invited us to see it through the lens of her experiences.

On Saturday, October 18, we join the City of Montgomery in celebrating fall with a Harvest Festival. We’ll have ghouls, mulled cider, a Witch’s Hat Toss game, and Halloween books and puzzles. It wouldn’t be Halloween without trick-or-treat candy. We will be open until 6pm on this special day.

We’re thrilled to have Garrett Ashley return to The NewSouth Bookstore with his new poetry collection, A Field Guide to North American Trees. Ashley is a fine reader of his own work, so this promises to be a lovely evening overall. Join us tomorrow, that’s October 14 at 5:30pm.

As part of Dr. Susie Paul's series One Hour/One Poem, she taught a poem by Walt Whitman and her students all suddenly understood the greatness of his art. She is a gifted educator, who breathes life into the poems she teaches. We are positively thrilled to host her for this special program.

It felt like we were up close and personal with Toni Morrison yesterday evening, thanks to a visit with Dana Williams, whose new biography Toni at Random was the subject of discussion. The book is a portrait of the legendary writer in her role as the first Black senior editor at Random House.

At the No Kings rally some weeks back, we spotted this great sign. What a fine reminder of how integral to the early life of our country was the patriot Thomas Paine. Common Sense crystallized sentiment for independence in 1776, earning for Paine the title of father of the American Revolution.
