I teach at a school with a large nursing program and my intro to sociology classes are often filled with nursing students. Out of 35 of them only 2 knew about the cuts and grant cancellations in HHS and NIH, they were very upset when we discussed it - TALK TO YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING

I'm waiting for the first university to implement a broad hiring freeze due to uncertainty about federal funding and policies. These discussions are undoubtedly happening behind the scenes, but nobody wants to say it publicly yet. It feels a lot like March 2020 across much of higher ed.

Soon before I left my job at WSU I had the pleasure of having lunch with Michael Burawoy after he gave a talk on campus. The students loved his energy, passion, and down-to-earthness, and I shared in their enthusiasm for his work. A few hours with him was enough to know this is a great loss. RIP.

I've been thinking a lot about what to say on here about everything that's happening. It has been hard to keep going and while I am no longer at risk of deportation (like I was during the last T administration) my body doesn't always remember that I'm now a U.S. citizen.

UPDATE: I am pulling out of this virtual mini-conference given how @asanews.bsky.social is shaking down members for MORE money. As universities face budget cuts, the idea that an association will add costs for members who are doing the work of providing the content is outrageous.

For anyone who thought @asanews.bsky.social was providing members with more resources through its virtual mini-conference program, think again! Apparently, even those of us who are speaking (for FREE) and are members who pay hundreds a year to ASA are being asked to pay $100 to register to speak...!

I needed to read this article, and I have a suspicion that many here who may be feeling the same dread as we enter 2025, may find it useful. Personally, in the 4.5 years I have lived in Worcester I've never been to a single city council meeting. That needs to change this year.

I didn’t anticipate the amount of relief having my web survey of Massachusetts high school counselors reach a 25% response rate would bring me! Yes, end-of-semester grading is hard. But I will always love listening to and grading the podcast episodes students in my immigration class submit! From interviewing their immigrant parents, to debunking stereotypes, listening to these episodes always brings so much joy!

I left a tenure-track position in 2022 to take another one. Almost three years later I can say that it was the right decision. Change is scary but sometimes things work out for the better.
