I remember sensing the world was screwed up in fundamental ways (not the ways my evangelical upbringing would have me believe). Being plucked from a life in Brazil and dropped in rural Indiana, I found sci-fi asking many of the same questions about our monstrous and crazy world. #scifisavestheworld

Sci-Fi and Horror share this particular quality, though their purposes are different, in my mind. Horror helps us deal with the fears of the unknown and what comes for us after we die. Sci-Fi faces what we fear the consequences of our choices may be for everyone we leave behind once we're gone.

"Even pain obeys entropy" might be the nerdier and more accurate way to get at what the old phrase "time heals all wounds" is trying to say.

Sometimes I wish I had something witty to post. Or something profound. Or even just something mildly interesting. But what I have is questions and heart that is exhausted. But time does it's thing and even pain obeys entropy.

The reality of growing both as a writer and a human being means that sometimes you outgrow your influences, people who inspired you, and mentors. How do we navigate these shifting waters? Who have you outgrown and why?

S.ex robots are a recurring theme in science fiction and pop culture. But are they really inevitable? This book makes a compelling argument that the rumors of impending pleasure bots are greatly exaggerated. Ironically, this book is terrifyingly relevant research for the novel I'm working on now.

The ending of Squid Game did NOT work. It felt like a betrayal of the contract with the audience that the story would go somewhere meaningful. It feels hollow, lacking catharsis, and the structure is a hot mess. They made some bold decisions with final two episodes. But, for me, it did not pay off.

I worked so hard on this very surreal segment for the novel I'm currently co-writing with Diana Porter (an expansion on our award-winning screenplay, Code Demon) and GoogleDocs betrayed me. It could have been worse. I was able to salvage it. Trust is gone, though. Suggestions for other collab tools?

It is critical that we have a society of thinking people led by thinking people. Reading any genre of fiction is proven to increase empathy. And reading thoughtful science fiction can help us think critically about the world we are leaving for the next generations. Who are we becoming?

AI-Generated short stories that are being submitted in mass numbers to science fiction magazines are clogging the system and ruining things for editors and writers like me. Not only is it unfair to real writers and editors to submit shit made by a prompt, the stories are also unpublishable garbage.
