You might ask why the Sec. for Security is talking about a civilian fire, but that's so any criticism of the horse hockey he's shoveling can be branded a threat to national security. I'm sincerely surprised they haven't just blamed Jimmy Lai. PKHGCDLLMCH.

renews_hkTo everyone who is closely following Hong Kong’s deadly fire from abroad,This is a letter penned by an independent journalist in Hong Kong.Allow me to first express my gratitude to many of you who have continued to show care and concern regarding Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades. Let us pray for those who perished and families who have lost their loved ones.Over the past couple of days, you may have read various accounts from regional and international media outlets about what caused the blaze at a housing estate where renovations were underway. Some of the reports have highlighted the buildings’ bamboo scaffolding or working platforms with wooden planks as a key reason for why the fire spread so quickly. The Hong Kong government also announced on November 27th, its intention to fully replace bamboo scaffolding with metal alternatives. As bamboo scaffolding is not commonly used elsewhere, the decision to phase it out has reinforced the impression that this method is dangerous and backward. However, this view cannot be more different to what the general public in Hong Kong thinks. The statements below are based on known facts or official announcements.View all comments

Grandparents care for the young until they go to school. When the senior members can no longer sustain this role, a maid—Filipino or Indonesian—is often hired to live in the home. The time of the outbreak of the fire, means that most of those trapped in the units were grandparents and toddlers.

Reflexively blaming bamboo with no evidence and no effort to address regulatory failures is journalist malpractice but it doesn’t stop there. Portraying living in a high-rises as a poor-people-thing, not a choice people gladly make, is the most condescending West-brained thing I’ve read in a while.

Perhaps you might not realize that Beijing and now GovHK wants to end the use of bamboo because Chinese state-owned construction companies can't get a sniff into the Hong Kong market as they have no expertise. Yes steel is inherently safer, but bamboo is very safe when built by those with expertise

Pro-democracy parties existed to be thorns in the government’s side — true enough. But the official story, that they “politicised” everything while the establishment camp championed livelihood issues, does not match the reality. See below for an example of how they also pushed back on local issues.
