Update: Just opened up Twitter and this was the first thing in my "for you" feed. Two of those "local journalists" covering the protests at the ICE facility who somehow were able to get a picture of themselves on the roof of that facility. Surely ICE had nothing to do with this, yes?

MAGA is trying to tell the country a story about how "Communist controlled Portland is out of control and so it's essential that the feds come in, guns ablazing, to rescue the poor suffering people of Oregon from their Communist, Antifa-loving politicians and police force."

For the vast majority of Oregonians and Portlanders, "what's really happening outside the ICE facility in Portland?" is not something that matters all that much. It's a pretty standard Portland protest involving maybe 100 people. The point is that "news" about it is part of a broader MAGA project.

It's important to note that this is simultaneously a top-down (Musk, Trump, and Zuckerberg), bottom up (those aspiring "citizen journalist" grifters producing content on the streets), and middle out (well-connected, state-level MAGA activists like this person being boosted by FB).

MAGA-aligned, algorithmic social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and soon TikTok are playing an important role in Trump's authoritarian efforts to boss "reality" into whatever shape he wants it to be. Traditional journalism and non-algorithmic sites like this struggle to compete.

This is what my "for you" feed currently looks like. 100% MAGA propaganda about what's happening in Portland. Based on what I hear from people I know who live there, what's happening in Portland is that 99.9% of peoples' lives are going on as usual and there's a small protest at one building.

Because I live in Oregon (I assume), my "for you" feed on Twitter is filled almost entirely with content from these far right "citizen journalists" who are more accurately described as MAGA content creators and crisis actors. Musk's goal was to replace real journalism with propaganda. It's working.

That Honey Badger Mom account has ties to Proud Boys and is a fan of Joe McCarthy. I've heard her describe Portland as a city that is literally run by Communists. She was not being ironic or trollish when she said it...she meant it literally.

Oregonians will recognize the names of almost all of those people cited on that list. Most have been involved in Proud Boy/Patriot Prayer/far right MAGA activism for several years. Daviscourt, for example, was with Turning Point USA for a few years and is a prolific far right content creator.

There is an entire stable of far right "influencers" cosplaying as journalists who are in Portland "covering" events there. The person who compiled this list was arrested for his actions on January 6. He texted a friend from DC to celebrate that the Proud Boys were "beating the shit" out of BLM.

Nick Sortor got on the radar of the DOJ *because* he is a MAGA activist, not because he is a "journalist." The well-connected Oregon MAGA activist who posted this on FB is friends with Harmeet Dhillon. She was just in DC a few weeks ago where she visited the DOJ.

But if you ask Meta AI who Nick Sortor is, he's just a plucky "conservative" journalist who has a "unique perspective" and offers "insightful commentary." I can assure you, there's nothing Sortor has ever said that departed in any way from the basic MAGA line of this administration.

Sortor is a Soros-dehumanizing MAGA "journalist" who thinks that the likely winner of the NYC mayoral race should be deported for being a Communist. Real "election integrity lover" and respecter of the will of the people that one.

Sortor appears to be a failed real estate guy from Kentucky who decided that making up shit about Kentucky politics would be a more lucrative way to make a living. He tried to make "drunk Andy Beshear" a thing...and also, apparently Kentucky was trying to steal the election from Trump?

Sortor has had a very difficult life as a journalist, because he seems to have been assaulted many times while just trying to do his job. One might be tempted to think that he might be better described by one of Alex Jones's favorite terms, "crisis actor."

To call Sortor "conservative" is to grant that "conservative" is a term that could accurately apply to someone who appeared on Alex Jones's livestream of the Charile Kirk memorial.
