Great video — but the real issue is driver culture. Why rush past a cyclist only to sit at the next red light, where they catch up anyway? Adding real risk for only a few seconds — or often zero gain. We wouldn’t barge ahead in a normal queue, so why do it behind the wheel? #RoadSafety #Cycling

Victim-blaming never helps. We’re rightly appalled when it happens in crime such as sexual assault — and we should be equally horrified when it happens in road danger. Stop blaming those harmed. In Northamptonshire, we provide an outcome update. Why? Well… 1) it’s important we inform the public as to whether their submission was useable. 2) it helps improve future submissions (especially for those in which enforcement action did not occur). 3) Most importantly, it’s plain good manners!!

Why is this important? Police can’t be everywhere 24/7, but the public can. If reckless drivers know any driver or cyclist could submit footage leading to enforcement, deterrence rises = safer roads. We will never know who or how many but for certain lives will be saved. Thank you for submitting!

Driving is a privilege earned, not a right. Why does our system not reflect this?

Banning cyclists from roads over 25mph — with criminal penalties, even imprisonment — would have been one of the worst laws in history. Active travel saves lives, improves health and cuts congestion. Focus on the real risk: dangerous driving. Cyclists cause under 1% of fatal crashes.

The attached ‘road crime reporting’ recommendations were previously (some years ago) circulated to all Police Forces within England and Wales. I stand by them as a means to ensure consistency and improve service. I share the frustration when service ‘so often’ does not match the principles outlined.

Police leadership must do more to recognise this is core to our mission. Saving life, tackling crime, and increasing public confidence. We make our communities safer when we deny active criminals use of the road. Embed the ethos of ‘Not every driver is a criminal but every criminal is a driver’.

Let’s shift the narrative: focus on drivers — with better legislation, clearer guidance and stronger communication — so harm isn’t normalised or dismissed as “cycling is risky”. It’s long past time to prevent harm, not explain it away. Less victim-blaming.

I understand your point. However, many young people would comply with GDL. Insurers are important via policy T&Cs. Even limited enforcement tackles law-breakers and reinforces deterrence. Do we agree GDL will reduce harm on our roads? If so, barriers can be removed and practical solutions found!

This week there’s intense focus on police reform. Also this week—today—I was briefed on a response where officers were flagged down and saved a man’s life: Immediate CPR, a defibrillator located and used, and the man regained consciousness. There’s much we must improve—and much we can be proud of!

This is real progress. Lives will be saved. Fewer young people will be left disabled. Roads will be safer. Tho why did it take so long to introduce this when the evidence is overwhelming? I sat in a long slip-road queue this morning watching drivers force their way in far ahead—slowing everyone. They wouldn’t do this in a cinema or supermarket queue (for example). So why the entitlement in a vehicle? Drivers who do this: please stop. It’s rude, arrogant and unsafe.

Driving is a privilege, earned through assessment and retained via acceptable standards. Why should such people ever be allowed to lawfully drive again and share the road with victims? We would never return a firearms licence to someone who unlawfully used a gun to kill. Why is driving different?

I’m so saddened to hear of the closure of RoadPeace for financial reasons. The charity did so much good — supporting crash victims, standing with bereaved families at their darkest moments, & tirelessly campaigning for safer roads. I hope one day it can be re-established & continue its vital work.

I’ve seen first-hand the utter devastation road deaths cause — families shattered in seconds, lives permanently changed. To dismiss this as an “utter non-problem” is wrong and deeply offensive. The acceptance of this devastation reflects a lack of knowledge and ambition. We can do so much better.
