Today is the end of Disability History Month. Every time I speak in Parliament, I know there are 14 million other disabled people sitting in wheelchairs or standing behind me. Here’s what I’ve been working on so far to create a society that treats every disabled person with dignity and respect 👇

Great to meet Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, recently to discuss the much needed improvements to the Penistone Line, including increasing line speeds and improving stations. This project is one of my top priorities as your MP, including campaigning for two trains an hour.

It was a pleasure to meet UNISON police staff and representatives from our South Yorkshire communities in Parliament earlier this week. Our police do a great job to support our communities and I'm backing them all the way to tackle antisocial behaviour and crime locally.

Great to see Octopus Energy confirm they will pass on the changes from the Autumn Budget 2025 to customers, cutting energy bills from 1st April 2026. Octopus is rightly calling on other energy suppliers to do the same. Our Government has acted to bring down the cost of living.

One of the proudest moments so far as your MP has been walking into 10 Downing Street with the incredible @ClaireThrossell. I'm incredibly proud that today, the Government have announced the largest crackdown on violence against women and girls in British history.

This week, the Government have announced £3 billion to create 50,000 new specialist places in mainstream schools for children with SEND. As a former SEND-statement child myself, I know how important it is that every child has their needs met where they live.

Our Government have launched our landmark National Youth Strategy – the first in 15 years! This is a commitment to community, connection, and belonging to deliver tangible change for our young people who have been let down for too long.

The first ever Neurodivergent Birth Awareness Week has just come to a close! This week is being led by NeurodivergentBirth, an incredible mum-led organisation working to close the inequalities that neurodiverse women face during maternity.

Over 23% of children across Penistone and Stocksbridge are currently growing up in poverty. This is unacceptable. The Government's Child Poverty Strategy will lift 550,000 children out of poverty – the largest reduction of child poverty in a single Parliament since records began.

As Medical Technology Awareness Week comes to an end today, I wanted to highlight the difference medical technology, such as the Accessible Pushchair, can make for disabled mums like Kirsty and I. Thanks so much to Designability for everything you do!

It might’ve been that ‘fine rain that soaks you right through’ but that didn’t stop Cllr Alex Burnett, Frances Nixon and I getting out on the doorstep in Silkstone this weekend! We picked up lots of issues, including local traffic problems and improving local transport.

It’s incredible news that in repealing the Two Child Benefit Cap, lifting 450,000 children out of poverty, the Chancellor yesterday announced in the Budget that the vile “rape clause” will also be removed. It is dehumanising, it is cruel and we will remove it from law.

I’m so proud that our Labour Government are removing the two child benefit cap from April - announced in today’s Budget. This will lift over a massive 450,000 children out of poverty across the country. This is the difference a Labour Government makes.

Today is the start of UK Parliament Week! As the first MP for our constituency in 100 years to have grown up here, it's so important to me to use my position to help others from our communities engage with Parliament.

RAIL FARES FROZEN! 🚂❄️ The government are freezing rail fares in England next year for the first time in 30 years. This fare freeze will directly bring down the cost of living, and make train travel more affordable.

Half a million more children will get access to Labour’s free breakfast clubs next year! Applications have opened for the next wave of free breakfast clubs - I’ll be writing to all our eligible local primary schools to help and encourage them to apply for this next wave.

Prescription charges frozen! ❄️ Ahead of the Budget next week, the Government have announced they will freeze prescription charges next year – taking firm action to tackle the cost of living. No one should put their health at risk because they can’t afford their medication.

This week, the Labour Government published England’s first ever Men’s Health Strategy – from cancer, to cardiovascular disease, and mental health. For the first time we're taking comprehensive, coordinated action to address the specific health challenges facing men and boys.

Yesterday marked Carers Rights Day. This year's theme is “Know your rights, use your rights”. Everyday, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member, or a friend, often unaware of their legal rights and what support and benefits they’re entitled to.

Representation of disabled people in broadcast tv, both on and off screen, has doubled since 2018, as reported by the @tweetCDN. Earlier this week, I raised in Parliament the need to go further, to double disability representation again, both on and off our tv screens.

This International Men’s Day, I want to highlight the current 15.5% pay gap for disabled men – leaving them earning £4,000 less per year than non-disabled workers. We know an unacceptable pay gap is also an acute problem for men with mental health conditions. 🧵

It was a pleasure to host and speak in Parliament at the RNIB Visual Rehabilitation Reception yesterday. When a person loses their sight, potentially suddenly and traumatically, the right support can mean the difference between isolation and independence, and ensure they can fulfil their potential.
