Disturbance from dog walkers meant the 1000s of gulls on West Sands were impossible to grill. However a few Little Gull close to shore and a Snow Bunting made for a good walk. A few dead auks along the beach. #birdingFife

New year’s trip to Shetland ended up lasting several more days than expected as we got snowed in. Some great birding done to start the year, all by foot. Highlights: a very close in Little Auk, Iceland Gull, Jack Snipe, and Merlin hunting. #BirdingScotland

Good walk with friends near Elie produced a Short-eared Owl and Wheatear. The last beach cricket match of the summer at Elie Beach delivered a flyover Crane! Lifer, and about annual in Fife! Great day out! #FifeBirding

Great day at the Fife Bird Club sea watch outing yesterday at Fife Ness, nice to see some familiar faces. Pom (lifer), Bonxie, and Arctic Skua. Sooty Shearwaters, though the highlight has to be the Bridled Tern, incredible bird, and very kind of it to choose yesterday to be in Fife! #FifeBirding

6 weeks in Shetland done. Some quality birding: Short-eared Owl, Red-backed Shrike, Red-necked Grebe, Baird's Sandpiper Quail, Cuckoo, Merlin. Breeding Dunlin, Whimbrel, and Red-Throated Diver. Highlight has to be self finding a 1st for Shetland Greater Sand Plover. #birdingscotland

Willow Warbler at Norwick this morning was my first warbler of autumn passage, also had my best views yet of the Cuckoo I found on Tuesday. Flock of 6 Twite were my first on Unst. A few singing Quail this afternoon (one from my window!) were great to hear #birdingscotland

Went down to the south of Unst today. Saw a few good birds, Golden Plover, Whimbrel, and Common Sandpiper with young. Highlight was bumping into the Osprey that has been hanging around the island for the last few weeks. #BirdingScotland

Near Huntingdon for a friend’s birthday this weekend, so had to nip down to Fen Drayton Lakes to see the gorgeous male Red-backed Shrike. Nice to see it catch and eat a dragonfly #ukbirding

Train up to Aberdeenshire with @tombeckett02.bsky.social but dipped Buff-breasted Sandpiper. News of a Pacific Golden Plover came - got stuck in tidal mud, lost both wellies, then faced a 40min shoeless walk… to dip again by 2 mins. Thanks to the birders who helped us out today. #BirdingScotland

Boat to the Isle of May was cancelled due to strong winds so I went to Kilminning instead. Happy to find and year tick a singing Cuckoo (video) there this lunchtime (perhaps the same bird that was at Fife Ness this morning?) #FifeBirding

Done with exams, tried the White Winged Scoter at Ruddons Point, dipped, but got nice views of Kittiwakes and Sandwich Terns. Female Redstart nearby was a nice surprise. Tried Kilminning after,well worth it, Spotted Flycatcher and a male Redstart showed briefly. Good start to the summer #FifeBirding

After dipping on it last night, I went back for the Woodchat Shrike near Pittenweem today. Had incredible views of it for a good while, as well as my 1st Wheatear of the year. #FifeBirding

Went up to Monikie north of Dundee today for the White-winged Black Tern. Crippling views of it in breeding plumage, flew right over my head at one point! Also lots of close Little Gulls, Goldeneye, and GC Grebes. Thanks to the birders who gave me a lift back to Dundee:) #BirdingScotland

Just back from Shetland visiting my girlfriend’s family—not a birding trip but squeezed some in. Black Guillemot from the ferry, Great Northern Divers, plenty of Ravens, Twite, and the vagrant Ross’s Goose up north. Also watched a pod of orcas hunt and take a seal—unforgettable. #BirdingScotland

Happy to finally connect with the Avocet on the Eden Estuary today despite the windy weather. Clear but distant views, my first time seeing one in Scotland. Plenty of Pink-footed Goose action, singing Skylark, and the usual waders and waterfowl. #FifeBirding

Just wrapped up a uni hill walking and bird club trip in the west coast and highlands with @tombeckett02.bsky.social and friends. Black Guillemot and Great Northern Divers, both year ticks, gave great views. On the Munros, Golden Eagle and Ptarmigan were incredible to see as always #BirdingScotland

Study break to twitch the Surf and White-winged Scoters at Leven, the choppy sea and strong winds made picking them out from the scoter flock tricky. No luck today. Plenty of Goldeneye and Long-tailed Ducks as consolation. (Not sure they were worth being splashed by the sea a few times) #FifeBirding

Lovely day at Oare Marshes today. At least 2 Great White Egrets, 6 Spoonbils, 100s of Brent Geese, Grey and Golden Plover, Avocet, Pintail, 100s of Black-tailed Godwits, and plenty of Marsh Harrier action. #KentBirding

Spent the last day of 2024 birding with a good friend at the London WWT. We were treated to a flying Bittern, Peregrine Falcon, and were surprised by a wintering ChiffChaff. Also briefly heard a Water Rail calling. Great way to wrap up a great year of birding. #LondonBirding

Good birding this morning in Richmond Park. Little Owl and Nuthatch were highlights. But bird of the day was this (poorly photographed) Green Sandpiper, great views of it wading and that lovely white rump in flight. Still on the island at Upper Pen Pond when I left. #LondonBirding #SurreyBirding

Had a wonderfully birdy Christmas Eve at the London WWT. With crippling views of Bittern fishing and brief glimpses of Bearded Tit (both lifers!). An overwintering Blackcap on the feeders certainly didn’t feel christmasy despite efforts made by a Redpoll to shift the day winterwards. #LondonBirding

Nice to be back in SW London for Christmas. A sunrise walk around Richmond Park yesterday failed to produce Woodcock. But happy to see 2 Raven and a Peregrine (both Park ticks for me) as well as one of the wintering Dartford Warblers (Lifer!). #surreybirding #londonbirding
