I don't think I've asked this question on here before. As we start a new month. Do you set yourself regular reading targets, or note how much you have read? With irregular shift patterns nowadays I have had to learn to accept that my daily reading time will fluctuate.

Too often the books from some of the larger publishers are overhyped and prove somewhat disappointing. This new arrival from Scottish publishers, Whittles, is proving to be one of my books of 2025 & all profits go to charity too. Two reasons to possibly tempt you? Review to follow.

With the aid of photos & illustrations, the early chapters are proving to be very useful in explaining how mines were used & triggered. The history of the Baltic Sea and the Danish waters in both world wars is also proving to be an interesting subject. A new release by Helion Books.

200 pages in and it seems my mid-book thoughts are shared by other reader's online reviews. There is very little here about any possible resistance activity that the young AH was involved in. In fact, large parts of the narrative are not about her at all. Somewhat disappointing.

David's intro states that this is bringing strands from other books together. So whilst this book is a very good introduction to the subject, readers of both airborne & Arnhem books will find the content familiar. *IMO, his book on the SBS in WWII is a magnificent read & his best.

Whilst very readable, I should have realised that a publication released in D-Day's anniversary year would be more aimed at a general readership. For those who have read a lot of WWII and/or Churchill books previously, than the majority of this content will feel rather familiar.

Yet again I find I'm not on the same page as all those historians who throw endless praise at certain books. Having several of Bishop's books, I asked for this one for Christmas. Unfortunately Paris '44 seems to spend far too long in other years. Not what I was expecting, sadly.

I've brought along a Robin Neillands as a holiday read to try. Whilst his narrative is very readable as he sets out to challenge some preconceived myths, I can't say that there is a great deal here that you wouldn't find elsewhere. Am I being harsh?

First holiday π is this 'well read' copy. Neave was himself captured at Calais before his famous Colditz escape & MI9 exploits. What is clear on reading this is his anger at the 'shambolic decisions & contradictory orders that resulted in all those men who were sacrificed'.
