Looking back at my journal musings from 2010, I see how far I've traveled. I'm more balanced now – less strung out, with more room for family and the small daily things that actually make a life worth living, while still working, still making things.

For 30 years, I have photographed American soldiers, and what has moved me most is the resilience of veterans. My purpose in doing this work is simple: to honor their courage, to hold up a mirror for those of us at home, and to insist that we reckon honestly with the human cost of war.

I'm honored to have two images from my ongoing book project, American Sketches, chosen for American Photography 42. Both of these images, taken in MS and TX, reflect the quiet, everyday moments that forge a community. It reminds us that there is a shared humanity in the diversity of America.

May 17th. International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. The struggle for LGBTQ+ rights is not a closed chapter — it is ongoing, uneven, and in many places, moving backwards. Human rights are not negotiable. They are not a spectrum. They simply are, or they aren't.

Photographing in Nigeria is always challenging— the camera is often unwelcome, and outsiders are viewed with suspicion. Yet once permission is granted, and acceptance earned, a cornucopia of vibrant visual elements and powerful extremes is opened up for my heart, mind, and camera to absorb.
