An RCMP officer in Christopher Lake spotted an injured pelican and alerted us. With advice from a Conservation Officer, WRSOS was contacted. Volunteer Penny swiftly secured the pelican for treatment. Thanks to vigilant community members and devoted volunteers, wildlife like this can heal.

Bird–glass collisions are a leading human-related cause of bird deaths today. Millions of birds are injured or killed yearly after hitting windows, especially during migration.

🌌 Protecting Nighthawks & Migratory Birds from Light Pollution Every autumn, Common Nighthawks and countless other migratory birds fill Saskatchewan’s skies as they begin their long journey south. These birds travel mostly at night, using the stars to navigate.

Ferruginous Hawk Release – Rush Lake On August 16, residents of Rush Lake noticed a Ferruginous Hawk grounded in town and called our WildLine. Suspected of suffering head trauma, she was carefully captured and monitored.

Earlier this year, WRSOS received a report of raccoons at the Rafferty Dam spillway near Estevan. Working closely with the @WaterSecurityAgency, the animals were safely contained and transferred for care.

Last week, our WildLine responded to a call about an injured American Bittern found at an auto parts yard in Regina. Bitterns are secretive marsh birds, but when threatened, they defend themselves with sharp beaks and bold postures.

At 4:30 a.m., Lane left us a message after dropping friends at the airport. On his way home, an owl flew in front of him on the Circle Drive bridge. He thought he had struck a duck—but when he pulled into his driveway, a Great Horned Owl was staring back at him from the grill of his truck!

🍇 WRSOS is heading to St. Walburg this weekend! Our amazing volunteer, Shelly, will be at the St. Walburg Wild Blueberry Festival on Saturday, August 23rd. This annual celebration takes place every August in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan.

We recently received a call from Ruben, a semi driver with Hardline Transport Solutions out of Moose Jaw. While driving on Highway 16 into Saskatoon, he saw a bird strike the corner of his truck—but instead of bouncing off, it was caught in the grill.

Judy, a transport driver, was on her way to pick up a barn swallow from volunteer Brittany when she got a flat tire on the highway. Brittany’s dad came to help by bringing the bird and changing the tire, enabling Judy to safely continue to Regina.

WRSOS is looking for self-motivated, wildlife-loving individuals to join our team as Wildlife Helpline Educators! This remote position is open to applicants anywhere in Saskatchewan, with all training provided online.

It may be tempting when you see people with wildlife as pets on the internet but remember: Some of the most common calls we see to our WildLine are for illegally kept wildlife. So, unless you confidently answered YES to all three of these questions, the answer is NO! You shouldn't keep that wildlife

Caring for wildlife often happens outside regular hours. A recent call involved a young crow tangled in a tree in Saskatoon. Early the next morning, our team contacted Urban Biological Services, and Melissa quickly coordinated with their arborist crew, who rescued the crow.

Discarded fishing lines threaten wildlife. Recently, a pelican was injured by a fishhook due to improperly discarded gear. Fortunately, it was rescued, treated, and released back into the wild.

We mourn the loss of Jim Krentz, a dedicated wildlife rehabber and WRSOS advocate. His board and hotline work greatly impacted animals, especially in the Battlefords. Jim's kindness and wisdom leave a lasting legacy. Our condolences to Claude and all who grieve. Thank you, Jim. You will be missed.

The Ethics of Bringing in ‘Nuisance’ or ‘Pest’ Wildlife At WRSOS, we believe that all wildlife has intrinsic value and plays a vital role in our ecosystem. Here’s why we don’t label animals as “pests” or “nuisances”.

The kind Barclay family did everything they could when raccoon kits appeared in their fireplace. After a pest control company failed to help, they reached out to us. Our Executive Director, Bonnie, safely contained the babies, and they were both successfully reunited with their mother.

Trapping and relocating wildlife is often considered a humane solution, but this is actually a myth. When animals are relocated, they are taken away from their known shelter and resources and placed in unfamiliar territory where they must struggle to find new food sources, among other challenges.

Reminder: It’s Illegal to Keep Wildlife We’ve seen an uptick in calls from people who have been caring for wild animals, sometimes for days or even weeks, before reaching out for help or trying to release them.

Last week, a big team effort pulled 7 ducklings out of a storm drain on the University of Regina campus. WRSOS volunteers, staff, and a helpful bystander all worked together to safely rescue these little ones. Afterward, everyone helped locate their mother so the ducklings could be returned to her.

Wild Hearts in Wakaw! A huge thank you to the incredible Grade 3D "Herd" at Wakaw School and their teacher, Mrs. Dunville! This thoughtful group of students learned about plants this year and raised money by growing and selling baby spider plants from their classroom.

Thank You, Tom and Donna Gall! We're incredibly grateful to Tom and Donna Gall for their generous donation of live traps to our Yorkton Field Station. These traps are an essential tool in helping us safely and humanely rescue injured and orphaned wildlife across the region.

In July, Amanda, a wildlife biologist in Maple Creek, discovered a burrowing owl on a road. As an endangered species in Saskatchewan, urgent action was needed. Amanda notified a Conservation Officer, who contacted WRSOS. With no local volunteers, the officer took the owl to the WCVM in Saskatoon.

Today is World Environment Day, urging action against plastic pollution, highlighted by the threat of discarded fishing lines to wildlife. These lines can cause severe injuries or death, as seen with a pelican at Plaxton Lake. Always dispose of fishing lines responsibly to protect wildlife.

Another safe renesting by WRSOS volunteer Patti! A Great Horned owlet was found on the ground in Caronport. The caller wasn’t comfortable putting it back, so Patti stepped in, placing it safely on a branch while the parent watched nearby. Every call, every rescue, proof that coexistence works.

After a tragic incident left a vixen dead, cries from the den led to the discovery of 5 surviving kits. A WRSOS volunteer spent two full days on-site, luring, listening, and carefully collecting each pup.

We’re already receiving calls about disturbed rabbit nests and lone baby hares (leverets) Spring is here—and so are wild babies. Cottontails nest in shallow grass depressions. If a nest is disturbed by pets, lawnmowers, or curious kids, don’t move the babies.
