Just did a podcast episode focusing on must see and read Grateful Dead books and docs. The doc Long Strange Trip still feels like the gold standard. Four hours, not a lot of gloss. They don’t dodge Jerry’s relationship with fame or the cost of it all. This is where I would start.

Looks like the new Red Hot Chili Peppers doc coming out March 20th is not a look at the bands career, but only focusing on the band’s early years and the death of original guitarist Hillel Slovak. And to me, that’s just fine.

Just watched the new Springsteen:Nebraska Live video running on Hulu. Just Bruce in an empty theatre,singing those haunting song from Nebraska. And even though I have heard those songs many times, they are still so unique and emotionally unsettling in the best possible way.

Really glad the Jeff Buckley doc “It’s Never Over” is finally streaming on HBO. I’m glad more people are getting exposed to him. The doc is a deeply human portrait of a lesser known musical talent whose life and legacy still resonate!

It’s been over a year from its release, but I’m still fascinated by “Mixing Up The Medicine” the Bob Dylan book that features artifacts from the Dylan Center.

Just finished Robbie Robertson’s second memoir “Insomnia” and then watched the perfect campaign to that the Mr.Scorsese documentary.

So many incredible rock ‘n’ roll books out this year…it’s kind of ridiculous!! Instead of scrambling last minute to find a good one I handpicked a bunch for every kind of fan and put it into a holiday shopping guide. Happy to share- just drop Guide in the comments and I will shoot it over.

Joni is 82 today! A true pioneer. Great to see her in better health, out and about, and even performing again. If you looking for a good read on Joni, last year a really interesting take on her career came out by the great writer Ann Powers. It’s called “Traveling on the Path with Joni Mitchell”

It’s finally streaming!!-the doc people have been asking me about for close to two years! Learning to Live Together:The return of Mad Dogs and Englishmen is on YouTube for only six days. Nov 11-16.

Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris- in the new Maiden book called “Infinite Dreams” (comes out Oct 7th) says he was influenced by Genesis, Yes and Wishbone Ash. For a band that helped define an entire metal genre, I didn’t expect that mix of bands to shape their sound.

Why do our legends that are still touring (McCartney, Dylan, Neil Young, Stones, Dead and Co etc. still allow whoever it is to charge so much for tickets? At this stage in their career, why don’t they just cover the cost of production and sell the tickets for as low as possible.

The Ed Sullivan show used to reach 30-50 million viewers a week!! This new doc Sunday Best: The Untold Story of Ed Sullivan looks at how Sullivan quietly but powerfully supported black artists during the height of the civil rights era. Great doc!!
