After the Louisiana Purchase, the Black Codes were enacted. declaring that manumitted Black people should never “presume to conceive themselves equal to the white.” Their movements, property rights, and social interactions with white people were restricted, relegating them to second-class citizens.

🌾 The semi-nomadic Fulani people moved with cattle across the savannah of Senegambia, the origin of many enslaved Africans. In early Louisiana, marshlands made cattle farming difficult, so enslaved herdsmen like Baptiste were crucial. #LouisianaHistory

Enslaved women worked in the fields and households by day, and tending to cooking, cleaning, and childcare by night. In addition to physical labor, they experienced reproductive exploitation. At Whitney Plantation, records show girls as young as 13 were already mothers.
