Today is World Ocean Day, and we are marking it by introducing a new series. Wild Neighbours looks closely at the ETP species sharing our waters with fishers across the CLME+ region. Animals whose wellbeing is tied to the health of the same ecosystems that make productive fisheries possible.

Ghost gear pollution, or Abandoned, Lost or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), continues to catch long after it leaves a fisher’s hands, adding strain to Caribbean fish stocks, vulnerable marine species and the habitats they depend on, while creating hazards for fishers navigating the water.

Every time a net goes into the water, there's a chance something unintended comes back up with it. It's called bycatch — and it affects sea turtles, sharks, rays and more across the Caribbean. We're breaking down what it means and what's being done about it.

EAF4SG is helping to build a more connected approach to fisheries management in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

The sea supports livelihoods, food security, culture and industry across the Caribbean region.

REBYC-III CLME+ is working to reduce bycatch, limit discards and address the harms caused by Abandoned, Lost and otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear in the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems.

Across Barbados, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, the REBYC-III CLME+ and EAF4SG are supporting healthier marine ecosystems and better futures for the people and industries connected to the sea.

In Barbados, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, REBYC-III CLME+ and EAF4SG are working with fisheries authorities and fishing communities to improve data collection, enhance stakeholder participation and strengthen legal and fisheries management frameworks.
