"I'm chasing good on this planet." That was what Dr. Jane once told George Stroumboulopoulos, when the two spoke about how busy she was. He shared the memory two weeks ago, when many of us came together in Toronto to honour the iconic figure.

Dr. Jane always had hope – and one of her greatest reasons for hope was young people. She saw that they were more connected, informed, and equipped than past generations. And she knew that they are not the leaders of tomorrow, but that they are already leading the way and shaping the world today.

Imagine: "When I was dreaming of going to Africa, I didn't know how I'd get there – but I also thought, well, there could be Canada." Many know Dr. Jane for her observations of chimpanzees but, had she made one different decision, she may have been studying wolves or wolverines in Canada instead.

Dr. Jane touched many people, but nobody knew her better than her own family. Last week, we heard from her one of her grandsons about what she meant to those who knew her best. "I will remember her for reminding me of the wonders of this life," Merlin van Lawick said.

Kabi was only two years old when he was found by park rangers and brought to Tchimpounga. Safe from poachers, Kabi was weak when he showed up and needed immediate treatment for parasites. The team at Tchimpounga made sure he got the care he needed, and he was able to recover. Video: Fernando Turmo

When Dr. Jane became one of the UN's Messengers of Peace, one Roots & Shoots group wanted to celebrate her message in an incredibly interesting way. With recycled materials, they created a giant peace dove puppet – a soaring symbol of hope, community, and compassion. Photos: Roots & Shoots

When we come together, we can make an incredible difference. "It may seem a small thing to pick up pieces of litter every day," Dr. Jane said. "But if there are a million people picking up pieces of litter [...] think of the amount of litter that will be picked up!"

"She focused on what could be done. She reminded us that change begins with compassion and that our humanity is our greatest tool." At the United States memorial for Dr. Jane this past week, Leonardo DiCaprio spoke words that perfectly captured who Dr. Jane was and what she stood for.

"That's the message: There's always hope – if we get together and take action." Dr. Jane knew that young people across the country and around the world could "make the world – again – a better place. The way it was. The way it can be. And the way it will be." Video: Werklund Centre

This current moment – with climate change worsening and the window closing – demands urgency, integrity, and unity. As leaders are coming together this week for COP, the annual climate change conference, the Jane Goodall Institute is urging them to act with this in mind.

Dr. Jane transformed our understanding of chimpanzees – and opened our eyes to just how similar we, as humans, are. But we have our differences, too! "If I have to pick one thing that makes us more different from other animals than anything else, it’s the explosive development of our intellect."
