China’s unfinished buildings have created stranded assets with substantial resource and socioeconomic costs Boom-and-bust real-estate cycles during China’s urbanization have left considerable building constructions unfinished, wasting resources and imposing widespread and persistent socio-environmental and financial burdens. However, the national scale and urban distribution of these hidden burdens remain unclear. Here, we compile a georeferenced inventory of 1,779 unfinished residential projects across Chinese cities and uncover substantial material waste, environmental pollution, and socioeconomic losses, revealing suburban clustering and uneven burdens that call for life-cycle accountability and targeted recovery in urban planning and housing governance. http://dlvr.it/TRbF62
