Reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Interesting read - she is very much an old-school environmentalist, a Paul Ehrlich-acolyte, which has hardcore fallen out of favor in the past decade or so. But she herself seems highly uncontroversial and popular.

Watched Sinners for the first time, in a post-Oscar’s showing - what a great film! I feel like it is really hard to have a genre film that feels good even though the end, but Sinners really had a strong ending and final act for a horror film. Really beautifully shot.

I don’t know if my timeline really hates One Battle After Another or if they are just extremely negatively polarized against it due to wanting Sinners to win best picture. PTA also seems weirdly controversial, maybe he is personally distasteful? I don’t know anything about him other than his movies

I would argue this has its roots more in the New Testament and the Great Chain of Being than anything else. I think taxonomic preference for man predates theory of evolution (see Linnaeus). Communication of theory of evolution and of taxonomy didn’t occur outside of cultural context

Another candidate for me is Don’t Worry, Darling - I’m a sucker for dystopian sci-fi and sci-fi mysteries, so it being so bad at what it was trying to do really was obnoxious. Also, the plot was a little cliché, but I honestly could have enjoyed that plot if it was well made

I used to sometimes watch two movies in a theater, back to back, paying for the first and sneaking in the second. The last time I did this, I watched a movie called Alita: Battle Angel and it was so bad, I looked up who made it and turns out it was produced by James Cameron lol

Gore to Biden is a pretty crazy swing to left. Even Obama to Biden was a big swing leftward. Moved left on LGBT issues dramatically, but also shifted left on trade, international relations, social safety net, economic stimulus.

By all reasonable accounts, the Democratic Party has shifted dramatically to the left since 2008. You would never know it from the discourse. I side with the left flank on policy issues, but I just don’t think the argument that the Democrats ignore their left flank holds water.

Watched the new Frankenstein movie and was a bit disappointed. Was a pretty interesting adaptation, but characters felt kinda flat, was pretty obviously in how it handled its themes, special effects not always that great. Felt like it should have been a better movie than it was.

Man, Bugonia is really good, kindof a bad date night movie, though.

Man, Mickey17 felt like a bit of a disappointment to me. Really awesome Pattinson performance, truly fantastic, rest of the movie kinda sucked. Tonally, it was very similar to Okja, with the goofy villains that were trying too hard to be funny and the very on-the-nose dialogue.

Kinda disappointed by the latest Severance episode. Irving scenes were interesting, confirms some stuff that had already been hinted at and developed an interesting dynamic, but the show overall is showing some signs of getting swallowed up by its plot

Man, just watched Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, what a movie! Feel like it is barely talked about and it is maybe one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen.

Got access to AppleTV, watching Severance and Silo. Both have a lot of hype, Severance lives up to it. Incredibly well-written and acted, super creative and smart show.
