hi everybody! long time no see! i have spent the past six months working on a project that i cannot disclose for at least a year. soon that will be over and i will be able to go back to making and sharing other illustrations! i missed you, bluesky!

Fun little experiment in style for the first day of #MothMay. My take on a mint moth, which I had not heard of before, but have striking colors!

Remember when I said I needed to draw more newts? This marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) is small, but now I have the itch. I definitely need to add more amphibians to my repertoire! This drawing was made with watercolor and colored pencil.

I don't know how to express this in a way that makes sense but my art improved by leaps and bounds once I realized it is less about translating exactly what you see onto paper than it is about creating an illusion in the viewer's eye of what you are seeing (and there are tricks, just like in magic.)

Happy #FossilFriday, check out these Lissodus teeth from the Substation Quarry! An array of blunt teeth would have helped these little sharks crush up crunchy crustaceans as they swam through a grand, ancient lake. These teeth almost certainly represent a new species! (1/2) #paleontology

anyways! i reposted this not so long ago but i’m proud to announce that the star of this piece has successfully survived the winter. i dug her up a couple weeks ago and her color is back! shaping will come soon.

I humbly present my topographical map of Colorado! This map was drawn by hand in graphite from a satellite image. It is not finished (it has a final purpose involving more components) but the topography itself is complete!

i’ve never seen a map like the one i want for one of my current projects, so i’m making my own! once i leave the front range behind, the rest will go much more quickly 😉

More experienced bonsai growers might say that this isn’t a bonsai at all - just a tiny tree in a pot. Maybe that’s true! But I’m still excited to see how we’ll grow together. It’s currently buried in the backyard, awaiting warmer weather. When it breaks dormancy, I’ll prune and shape it! (2/2)
