#AdventSingles Day 6 Right, I’ve had enough of dreadful Xmas dingoes (a weird autocorrect, but I’ll stick with it) that nobody knows, and switch to a couple that are merely naff. There’s something about how tattered and tired the sleeve on this looks that just seems utterly perfect. 👌🏼

#AdventSingles Day 5 Another failed attempt at a festive cash grab. Lou Stonebridge (Glass Menagerie, Paladin) & Tom McGuiness (Manfred Mann) met in McGuiness Flint, were briefly a duo, then formed The Blues Band with Paul Jones. A neo-doowop thing, on the fence between homage and pastiche - avoid.

DAMON/NOMAD See what they did there? Damon Metrebian had some connection to Brentford Nylons, and this was sold in their shops. There were no other Nomad releases, although amazingly it got rereleased in ‘76 by Polydor, as by Damon Metro. It can best be described as drippy. #AdventSingles Day 4

Remember Telly Savalas’ gravelly, hammed-up, spoken rendition of If? Remember the coked-up embarrassing pastiche of it that managed to become a hit because Radio DJs had no shame? Well, this is the same guys having not-Telly ‘hilariously’ make a mess of the 12 Days of Xmas. #AdventSingles Day 3

Irish showband country and western Christmas music - sounds like a genre I’ve just made up. It is, and I wish I hadn’t needed to. Strange as it may seem, Last Christmas managed to keep it off the festive top spot in the year of its release. At least it looks interesting #AdventSingles #Day2

So, we’re doing #AdventSingles are we? I notice some people are just gratuitously posting random good singles, well you’ll get none of that here! You’ll get 25 Christmas singles, starting with a bunch of doomed attempts to cash in, and very gradually crawling upwards in quality. Day 1

We’ve not had a vintage paperback for a while, so here’s Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. It uses a mash up of Hindu and Buddhist figures & myth, & Hawkwind borrowed the title for a track on the album Doremi Fasol Latido. Dave Brock wrote the lyrics but doesn’t seem to have bothered reading the book.

Here go then, we’ve finally hit 1967, and here’s the first #WeekendSingles batch of them (with one ‘66 interloper). Are you going for fringed buckskin and droopy moustache; cheesecloth, Afghan coat and flowers in your hair; or paisley cravat and vintage cavalry officer’s jacket?

Since I was listening to a @500songspodcast.bsky.social podcast about You’re Gonna Miss Me when I realised it was #12InchTuesday (it’s almost like they come round every week), I thought I’d better post it - even though it’s a 10”. So here it is, along with another three 10”s. #WeekendSingles

A curiosity. 2 years after the original, remarkably similar instrumentation, but with a disco drum machine, so it loses any swing. Plus a gender swap in the verse, which is particularly odd as the song makes more sense from a woman’s perspective. MMc didn’t enjoy the ‘Vomit Comet’. #WeekendSingles

This is my last ‘mid 60s’ #WeekendSingles set - although there will be a repress set at some point - all my other original stuff is boxed up for my move. Notables include an Indian press of The Kinks & the rare first Alan Bown release. I’ve posted the Nuggets stuff before, but I do love them.

Another batch of mid-sixties releases for #WeekendSingles I’m chomping at the bit to get into 1967, and the extraordinary efflorescence of the late sixties. Nevertheless, there’s some great stuff here - and in this series I’ve mostly restricted myself to posting just one disc by each artist.

Actually, there is a real world effect here: it dehumanises others. It supports the NPC mindset - if other people are just code, then it doesn’t matter if you mistreat or kill them. By contrast, Blake’s epithet ‘Everything that lives is holy’ encourages us to treat others with respect and care.
