Wrestling with the guidance on how much rain will fall tomorrow. We've thrown our weight behind the European model (pic 1), while the US model isn't so sure (pic 2). European likely picking up on t-storms. (Placement may be off depending on where they form.)

I’d like to think this is our best chance at a long, soaking rain in weeks, but model guidance often overplays its hand on days-long rain (and snow) forecasts. We’ll see how it plays out.

Tied for 11th driest, this (climatological) summer was also almost 2 deg. above normal (but not as hot as last summer).

Massive dust storm (called a haboob) swallowed Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix this afternoon. Ground stop as visibility dropped to zero. Haboobs originate from dry downdrafts from thunderstorms (shown in blue).

Erin go bragh! Technically, Iceland is the final destination for the storm, but while it’s nearby, we have wind tonight & early tomorrow. Surf, on the other hand, will continue to roil the coast into the weekend. Be safe at the beach!

Big storms last two days…this time the North Shore shared the goods. Big lightning maker today. Lots of positive stroke lightning, which tells us there was plenty of ice/hail in these clouds.

Been a lil’ cool in the AM? Martha’s Vineyard on track for its 5th morning in the 40s this month (airport location). Warming trend for everyone this weekend…and a stellar one at that.

Peek at the model guidance for this afternoon. Storms start up after 1p, then intensify south of the Pike by 4-6p. Watch for gusty winds, torrential rain, & possible hail in some of the stronger storms. They bring relief from the heat late tonight.

Did the day fly by to you? 🧐 Not sure if you missed the millisecond, but for the 2nd time this month, Earth was spinning a smidge faster. Scientists aren’t 💯 certain, but they surmise it could have been because our molten core sloshed around a bit, or the Moon’s gravitational pull was a tad off.

Select rainfall amounts from CoCoRaHS, Skywarn, and amateur radio operators. Simply incredible rain. Deluge is over now. Drying this afternoon.

Not like last night’s thunderous volley, but we could still plenty of heavy rain (1-3 in the heavier bursts). Exits in the morning, dries out in the afternoon.

Once again storms having a hard time developing inside the (pseudo) circle. Focus on the Cape/Buzzards Bay this evening. After midnight, spotty showers/weak rumbles are possible for all.

It’s only 8am and we’re 87 in Boston. This is a rare heat that will overtake you if you’re not careful. Records will fall (daily, all-time June) & it may be the hottest since July of 2011 (103). 🔥

It’s happening….a REAL summer weekend. Other than an early shower threat (not a promise) Sunday morning, we have a lot of sun to look forward to. Watch that heat index Sunday afternoon. 🥵

While the drought was getting last rites before this nor’easter, we are clearly in a surplus now. The storm’s rainfall wasn’t a record-setter in Boston, but it’s been years since we had that kind of deluge.

Ignore your weather app. 📱It’s horrible at timing ANY weather. We have a better idea that a few storms are possible Saturday afternoon (AM is dry) and off & on showers (implies a few dry times) are expected Sunday.

File this under “Science gets a bad rap”. We’re still in a drought. It’s been gray & rainy, but we haven’t had enough to make up the deficit from the fall. Like having a FT job but barely getting by. I’ll go kick rocks now. 🪨
