It’s agonizing to watch the scenes in Grand Blanc, Michigan, where an LDS congregation was attacked today. God be with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone in that ward and wider community. Violence is a moral disease. The ultimate answer is not reciprocal state violence, but moral renewal.

Been reflecting on a memory: I’m 16, sitting in the back seat of our family car as my dad drives. He’s commenting on the prosecutions of White House officials after Nixon’s resignation and the Watergate scandal. “Our system worked,” he says. We’ll see if that still holds in the years ahead.

Plenty of people will see the deeply flawed Bonhoeffer film this week. It will renew the question of whether we are in a “Bonhoeffer moment.” I say, yes, but not in the way it’s typically interpreted. That’s why my new resistance community is reading #Bonhoeffer together, anew. PM me to join.

I think one of the best things my fellow evangelicals can do to begin our long recovery from the MAGA heresy is read Ethics by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Seeing fictionalized versions of him in an entertaining movie isn’t enough. Read deep and wide—like he did. Read his Ethics—twice—just as a start.
